Book recommendation: 'Demystifying Dissertation Writing: A Streamlined Process from Choice of Topic to Final Text" http://www.amazon.co.uk/Demystifying-Dissertation-Writing-Streamlined-Process/dp/1579223133/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1302589459&sr=8-1 Recommended to me by a fellow #phdchat contributor, this book is particularly good on methods of reading and note-taking during what the writer calls the "pre-writing" phase of research, and organising notes into coherent text.

Not just limited to organising and planning, but generally very useful is 'The Unwritten Rules of PhD Research' by Petre and Rugg.  I wish I'd read it at the beginning of my first year.   http://www.amazon.co.uk/Unwritten-Rules-Research-Study-Skills/dp/0335237029/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1304614348&sr=1-2
