Writing and Reference Management Tools

Page history last edited by Liz Thackray 11 years, 2 months ago Saved with comment

This page was created to tie to what was intended to be an Academic Writing and Reference Management tools seminar. You are welcome to add to it or even improve the format. We have started with four products with which we are familiar, at least by name. More will be added as #phdchat members want to introduce others.

Various indications are that this may not be as easy to do as planned. So, we will continue to populate the related topics as company representatives and #phdchat participants have time and information to share. As this develops, we can revisit the idea of having a synchronous or asynchronous seminar or discussion series. In the meantime, enjoy the resources that have been provided, and feel free to add your own stories.

  • Endnote is the ubiquitous reference manager that has been around for 20 years. Your university probably can get you a reasonably priced version. It is a little dated and lacks the bells and whistles of modern reference managers, but it's library search capabilities are unmatched. www.endnote.com
  • Citavi combines reference management with comprehensive knowledge organisation. It offers search facilities of over 4000 databases and catalogues and has facilities for excerpting quotations, creating outlines, and planning tasks. Currently only available for Windows www.citavi.com
  • Mendeley is a research management tool for desktop and web where you can store and organise your papers.  You can also explore trends in research and connect with other researchers in your discipline. www.mendeley.com
  • Qiqqa is a free research management and reference management tool for Windows desktop, Android tablet and Web. Your PDFs become fully text searchable - even if they are scans by using OCR. Your annotations and highlights are succinctly summarised in annotation reports. Your citations and bibliography are automatically built for you in Word using any of 1500 CSL styles. You can explore your PDF collection graphically using automatically generated tags, coloured document themes, and dynamic brainstorms. Qiqqa.com

I am using Zotero to manage my literature and citations for my dissertation. I've not tried to use it stand alone, but so far I have no complaints. I have a subscription to EndNote and have used it for years. While it is quite the workhorse, it also is huge and cumbersome. That being said, I've not used either resource to manage my graphics, tables, etc., and there could be huge differences in usefulness in that regard.
