'Structuring the Thesis - From notes to finished product'
#phdchat tweet log - 27th July 2011
@NSRiazat - Welcome to #phdchat - the topic for tonight is 'structuring the thesis - from notes to finished product'.
@drjavafox - Hi everyone in #phdchat land!
@drjavafox - Probably going to be dipping in and out for this one @NSRiazat - have another deadline rapidly approaching. #phdchat
@Blues76 - hi everyone #phdChat
@lizith - @drjavafox hiya! reporting into the #phdchat for this evening!
@NSRiazat - @drjavafox I have some self imposes deadlines too - am back on track with writing/analysis so want to keep it going. #phdchat
@sarahthesheepu - @NSRiazat thats a complicated one as it will go through many variants #phdchat
@merry30 - Hello #phdchat - may not be very active tonight - I'm catching up with 3 days' email & rss feeds (the joy of holidays...!?)
@drjavafox - My major advice for structuring the thesis: be flexible! it will definitely morph, change, grow, alter over time. #phdchat
@NSRiazat - #phdchat - what systems methods are people using to structure their thesis? Not as simple as it sounds. I changed my structure a few times.
@sarahthesheepu - @NSRiazat i changed mine right up until the end! lol #phdchat
@salma_patel - @NSRiazat Hi everyone! Is it too early to structure the outline of thesis in the first year? #phdchat
@salma_patel - @NSRiazat Have you seen any examples of well structured theses? Willing to share? :) #phdchat
@sarahthesheepu - @salma_patel @NSRiazat not at all #phdchat
@mrgunn - @salma_patel @NSRiazat It's never too early, but you'll certainly re-structure it many times as you go (if you're doing it right) #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @sarahthesheepu Yes agree - will vary. It will be interesting to hear how people are organising/structuring their thesis. #phdchat
@salma_patel - @NSRiazat is there a 'best practice' structure for PhD theses? #phdchat
@lizith - @NSRiazat I did a rough outline after about 6 months and revise it regularly as my ideas develop and I go through another iteration #phdchat
@sarahthesheepu - @salma_patel @NSRiazat i'm not arrogant enough to say mine was perfect but if you want to look at mine am happy to share #phdchat
@drjavafox - From the beginning my supervisor urged me to come up w a Table of Contents (ToC) as a 'scaffolding' to my thesis #phdchat
@salma_patel - @mrgunn @nsriazat I structured mine a couple of months in. Now using mindmap will present it to supervisors to see what they think #phdchat
@anandan22 - @salma_patel It depends on ur past rsrch exp. If u hv previous exp, you shd be moving ahead with some structure in place #phdchat
@drjavafox - And now I find it SO HELPFUL, I cannot tell you all. I refer to it constantly. #phdchat
@lizith - @drjavafox my starting point was writing a 'dream abstract' as though all was done and dusted #phdchat
@raulpacheco - #phdchat never forget to consult with your supervisor about expected structure of dissertation - consult EARLY and OFTEN. Avoid headaches.
@salma_patel - @sarahthesheepu @nsriazat that would be great. Is it online? #phdchat
@drjavafox - @lizith omg WHAT a good idea. #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @salma_patel @mrgunn (2)....it really helped to structure my thesis and see how it's all building up to finished article. #phdchat
@misskatielowe - @drjavafox I'm doing something similar - although it's growing in every direction (all over my wall!) #phdchat
@raulpacheco - #phdchat my advisor told me what the university AND him expected from my dissertation - I built structure outline from his feedback.
@salma_patel - @lizith @drjavafox brilliant idea indeed! I should write a dream structure ... :) #phdchat
@lizith - @drjavafox I've kept revising that and using it as a steer and goal #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @salma_patel Have looked at a few in my university when we had the residential. Many are online (libraries) for each discipline. #phdchat
@SarahStewart - Hello everyone. Long time, no see #phdchat
@raulpacheco - #phdchat a suggested table of contents is a good approach - but ensure it has what your advisor and doctoral committee expect from your work
@drjavafox - @misskatielowe yeah I hear you - but I would say after the 7th or 8th iteration, my ToC started to become more stable #phdchat
@misskatielowe - @lizith That's an amazing idea! #phdchat
@raulpacheco - #phdchat my thesis was structured as a book manuscript but my university encourages now assembly of journal articles - different approaches
@NSRiazat - @lizith @drjavafox also wrote an abstract - it really helps focus on what you are doing. #phdchat
@Blues76 - #phdchat but the structure should be very str8 forward. Introduction, State of the art (Background theory) , Proposed Methods, Evaluation...
@salma_patel - #phdchat Are you all using a traditional structure? Lit review, method, studies, discussion, concl. Whose doing it differently? #phdchat
@raulpacheco - #phdchat make sure your thesis complies with university guidelines - this applies to the TOC as well - remember it's in flux and not static
@anandan22 - It doesn't mater whether end output has to be in the form of a thesis or compilation of journal papers, mindmap & TOC would help! #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @sarahthesheepu Mine is constantly changing. The tentative initial contents page really helped me focus on 'what I NEEDED to write' #phdchat
@misskatielowe - #phdchat I'm on the phone a lot of the day for work - oddly enough having to find simple but engaging way of discussing thesis has helped!
@NSRiazat - @sarahthesheepu also - structure helped me allocate tentative word limits for each chapter/section so I had a goal. #phdchat
@salma_patel - @NSRiazat @lizith @drjavafox I looked at my supervisors thesis and made the outline in the form of table of contents #phdchat
@NSRiazat - "@drjavafox: My major advice for structuring the thesis: be flexible! it will definitely morph, change, grow, alter over time. #phdchat"
@merry30 - #phdchat I developed a rough chapter structure early on (had to for a research training module). It's stayed more or less the same (so far)
@davidwees - Checking out #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @mrgunn @salma_patel Agreed - re: restructuring. Mine is constantly evolving as I engage with data/literature. #phdchat
@Blues76 - #PhDChat format may change between universities and professors but the structure in my opinion is very standard... outline is ok
@merry30 - @nsriazat @sarahthesheepu I like giving myself rough word counts for chapters in advance so I can see how I'm doing #phdchat
@SarahStewart - I still haven't decided on a topic...7 months later!! #phdchat
@davidwees - Is anyone writing a PHD through a less traditional form, like a blog? Anyone sharing their research under CC license? #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @drjavafox From the beginning my supervisor urged me to come up w a Table of Contents (ToC) as a 'scaffolding' to my thesis #phdchat - same
@lizith - @SarahStewart do you think you are any closer to deciding? #phdchat
@steelemaley - @davidwees @leighblackall is !!!! #phdchat
@davidwees - @SarahStewart I'm working on ideas for a phd well in advance of actually starting my phd. #phdchat
@anandan22 - @davidwees are such new formats of thesis acceptable in any university? any examples? #phdchat
@SarahStewart - @davidwees I am hoping to share my EdD on my blog with a CC licence but I'm still in very early stages of thinking about it #phdchat
@SarahStewart - @lizith Very slightly closer. Decided it will be in midwifery education, not general education #phdchat
@steelemaley - @davidwees #onphd or #nophd = http://bit.ly/hlunRT #phdchat
@JeffreyKeefer - @SarahStewart Nice to see you here as well! #phdchat
@lizith - @SarahStewart that's progress - still lots of options which is good #phdchat
@SarahStewart - @lizith Writing EdD essay this w'end about issues in midwifery education that hopefully will get me thinking more & help me focus #phdchat
@drjavafox - .@salma_patel my thesis is UK traditional for sociolinguistics: theory; methodology; background; analysis; discussion; conclusion #phdchat
@SarahStewart - @davidwees Good idea to do lots of prep before you enrol #phdchat
@drjavafox - YES! RT @NSRiazat: also structure helped me allocate tentative word limits for each chapter/section so I had a goal. #phdchat
@lizith - @SarahStewart you may find having some time away helps too - some distancing #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @SarahStewart I decided on my finalised research questions this week (emergent grounded theory) #phdchat
@davidwees - @anandan22 Good question. We should do whatever we can to ensure that the format of a phd doesn't confine it to a shelf somewhere. #phdchat
@maryam_bakht - @drjavafox @NSRiazat Although don't be surprised if your work limits are very off. One of my chapters is 70+ pages, another 9. #phdchat
@drjavafox - @lizith @SarahStewart distancing totally helps me - just an hour walk lets my mind wander & think through things #phdchat
@anandan22 - @davidwees agreed! but not all universities would agree to it. A recent blogpost suggested social review of journal papers! #phdchat
@MaryAnnReilly - @davidwees Jerry Willis was a colleague . U might find his work on practice dissertation int. http://bit.ly/ndPpNU #PhDchat
@drjavafox - @maryam_bakht @NSRiazat yes true, but for me at least the word count is a goal - helps my motivation #phdchat
@lizith - I'm not thinking too much about word count - I expect to have too much and to remove stuff for separate output #phdchat
@robdrummond - Always worth keeping half an eye on how your final structure might lend itself to being easily split for publications later. #phdchat
@NSRiazat - My only change from traditional structure is data analysis before lit rev chapter. ('Straussian' emergent grounded theory) #phdchat
@davidwees - @chr34is Thanks for the tip. #phdchat
@maryam_bakht - @drjavafox @NSRiazat Yes, definitely. I think goals like that are great. I'm only talking in hindsight. #phdchat
@drjavafox - @SarahStewart understand that... something will click & just catch your attention I'm sure @lizith @NSRiazat #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @drjavafox @maryam_bakht word count per chapter stops 'rambling'. I know what I need to say and how many words I have to say it. #phdchat
@drjavafox - @NSRiazat @maryam_bakht lol sometimes for me it's like 'HOW much more do I have to write?' #phdchat
@SarahStewart - @JeffreyKeefer How's your research going? #phdchat
@davidwees - @anandan22 Personally, I think there should be more support for starting phd process before enrollment. Open sharing would help. #phdchat
@lizith - @NSRiazat @drjavafox @maryam_bakht I think I need to ramble and then edit - a word count too early would constrain me #phdchat
@jessgrieser - Is anybody using Scrivener for their dissertations? I'm just getting started and just found this stuff and I'm wowed. #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @maryam_bakht @drjavafox Know I would have lots of irrelevant (but nice!) themes in my chapters that don't answer focus questions. #phdchat
@davidwees - @SarahStewart @JeffreyKeefer I followed both of you & will check your blogs when I'm not on my phone. #phdchat
@anandan22 - Could concept mapping technique be used to report literature review? Any citations that would be of help? #phdchat
@NSRiazat - "@jessgrieser: Is anybody using Scrivener for their dissertations? I'm just getting started and just found.... #phdchat" @JeffreyKeefer
@NSRiazat - @lizith @drjavafox @maryam_bakht that's a good point Liz #phdchat
@salma_patel - @lizith @nsriazat @drjavafox @maryam_bakht how are you all deciding on word count? How is it divided generally in %s? #phdchat
@lizith - @NSRiazat @drjavafox @maryam_bakht I think important to recognise we all do things differently but will end up in similar place #phdchat
@aephd - @lizith +1 on rambling first then edit.. Sometimes my nonsense has hidden academic treasures.. #phdchat
@aephd - @anandan22 what do mean by 'concept mapping'? #phdchat
@Batty_Towers - It's Weds & I'm home, rare. Hurrah! Able to eavesdrop on #phdchat for first time. (Slightly concerned I'm meant to be somewhere though)
@lizith - @Batty_Towers good to see you - worry about where you should be later #phdchat
@maryam_bakht - @lizith @NSRiazat @drjavafox That's for sure. I had a quite insane method myself and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @aephd @anandan22 understanding that conceptual framework is same as concept map...please advise. #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @Batty_Towers Welcome to #phdchat - don't eavesdrop join in. It's a very friendly community. :)
@NSRiazat - "@lizith: @Batty_Towers good to see you - worry about where you should be later #phdchat" - agree! :)
@jessgrieser - @aephd @lizith Whoops and totally forgot to tag that last comment re: 15 mins a day. #phdchat
@drjavafox - @salma_patel I think I wrote couple of chapters & decided based on that & on other theses I'd read @lizith @nsriazat @maryam_bakht #phdchat
@aephd - @NSRiazat as in graphical representation of conceptual framework??? #phdchat
@drjavafox - @Batty_Towers welcome, glad you could make it! #phdchat
@Janshs - Think important to keep safe the bits you 'cut' - never know when they'll come in handy #PhDChat
@lizith - @Janshs: Think important to keep safe the bits you 'cut' - never know when they'll come in handy #PhDChat definitely!
@sarahthesheepu - @lizith @Janshs thats very true #phdchat
@drjavafox - I save every iteration of chapter & everything I cut out - like @aephd says, you never know where a hidden treasure will appear #phdchat
@DraycottMC - @lizith @jahshs I wrote a whole paper out of a cut bit last year... that ended up being a key chapter #phdchat
@lizith - @drjavafox @aephd my structure has changed so much, I've got whole piles of cuttings waiting to be rooted elsewhere #phdchat
@drjavafox - lol I see @Janshs and @jessgrieser also have the same idea to keep everything you write #phdchat
@drjavafox - haha okay everyone has that idea! #phdchat
@jennacondie - Just trying to catch up on #phdchat v relevant topic for me by the looks of things, trying to write up!
@NSRiazat - @aephd ah - same as a conceptual framework. :) #phdchat
@Janshs - @drjavafox @jessgrieser you evetually lose some stuff but just not *too* quickly? #phdchat
@drjavafox - Gonna have to step away from #phdchat for now - thanks everyone for another terrific discussion.
@lizith - @drjavafox good to see you - all the best with hitting the deadlines #phdchat
@drjavafox - @Janshs when I start a new version of a chapter, I make a new file, rename it, and edit that. Never delete anything. @jessgrieser #phdchat
@aephd - @lizith @drjavafox yeah, it helps to label & review them..sometimes I find them & think I'm genius..other times not so much ha! #phdchat
@jessgrieser - @drjavafox Well, I haven't started writing the diss yet, but I do it with my novels and my articles. You never know.... #phdchat
@jennacondie - @NSRiazat @jessgrieser @jeffreykeefer I tried scrivener n lost some work somehow, not sure how I lost it, luckily backed up on word #phdchat
@aephd - @NSRiazat got it! #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @jennacondie @jessgrieser @jeffreykeefer Looked into scrivener but prefer Word. #phdchat
@lizith - @jennacondie @nsriazat @jessgrieser @jeffreykeefer I flirt with Scrivener, but it doesn't do it for me #phdchat
@Blues76 - #PhdChat I use plain text files with latex and papers 2.0 for mac os x. Are we getting over complicated about this topic?
@NSRiazat - @jennacondie @jessgrieser @jeffreykeefer Copy&Paste paragraphs to move sections round. Also prefer printed copies to annotate. #phdchat
@Batty_Towers - Does everyone using Word know about the quick access toolbar? cos I didn't until last week and it's most helpful #phdchat
@naomi_jacobs - @jennacondie @NSRiazat @jessgrieser @jeffreykeefer I love Scrivener. It's tricky to learn, but fits my brain much better than Word! #phdchat
@lizith - @Batty_Towers what do you mean by 'quick access toolbar' - I may know by another name #phdchat
@jessgrieser - @nsriazat @jennacondie @JeffreyKeefer i really need to be using a chat twitter so that I don't keep forgetting the hashtag. #phdchat
@Janshs - #phdchat slightly different slant: how do ppl use other theses to help define the structure? other ideas for structure?
@jennacondie - @lizith @nsriazat @jessgrieser @jeffreykeefer cool its not just me!hav transcribd n analysd data in word so easier 2stay in it #phdchat
@SarahStewart - Thanks to everyone for grt advice for when I eventually start my thesis. Bye for now #phdchat
@jessgrieser - @naomi_jacobs Yeah, I feel it fits my brain, too. @jennacondie @NSRiazat @jessgrieser @jeffreykeefer #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @jessgrieser @jennacondie @JeffreyKeefer Try Twitterfall. #phdchat
@ai1sa - looked at many, most follow why, who says what, leading to how: a)theory of b) mine own use, then data + discussion, conclusion(s) #phdchat
@lizith - @SarahStewart bye - was good to see you again #phdchat
@Janshs - bye for now @SarahStewart #phdchat
@jennacondie - #phdchat someone told me to map out chapters as soon as poss,can always change but at least you've got some idea bout what your aiming for:)
@Batty_Towers - @lizith #phdchat The bar that sits between the top of your document and the main toolbars; you can add commands & customise it
@JeffreyKeefer - Hoped to attend more than 2 minutes of #phdchat, but work calls. Will catch up yet again tonight. Hope somebody records it.
@aephd - @NSRiazat don't think of it as slow day for thesis, but a diff type of 'progress'.. Ha! #phdchat
@Batty_Towers - @lizith #phdchat I thought that functionality had been lost in Word 2007 so was a but chuffed to find it again
@ai1sa - Inside of classic structure, Ive then followed the writers in my fields approach as to how they treat the literature, or the data #phdchat
@aephd - @jessgrieser thanks! I'll have to check out that book! #phdchat
@lizith - @Batty_Towers I'll take a look - I'm a Mac user and the layout is a little different #phdchat
@lizith - @aephd: @NSRiazat don't think of it as slow day for thesis, but a diff type of 'progress'.. Ha! #phdchat LOL! I like it
@jennacondie - @naomi_jacobs @nsriazat @jessgrieser @jeffreykeefer I did like the pin board and how you can move stuff around easy #phdchat
@Blues76 - @aephd @jessgrieser what book? #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @lizith @aephd any progress is good progress. :)) #phdchat
@aephd - @Blues76 @jessgrieser 'write your dissert in 15 mins a day' #phdchat
@jennacondie - @jessgrieser @naomi_jacobs @nsriazat @jeffreykeefer wrote word doc recently called scattergun approach,loadsof bits all over place #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @Janshs I looked at a few theses - then decided my own structure. Now more confident about taking ownership of my own structure. :) #phdchat
@jessgrieser - @blues76 @aephd Writing Your Diss in 15 mins a day. http://ow.ly/5ORWx Was recced by some friends who'd just finished. Seems good. #phdchat
@NSRiazat - #phdchat - 8.30pm BST brings us to the end of this week's chat.
@ai1sa - where my structure has hit a wall is concluding, I have so many...that i am not writing any of them :( #phdchat
@Janshs - think it's important to try ideas out re structure @NSRiazat #phdchat
@thandiwestar - #phdchat just wondering if anyone out there wants to write my thesis for me? Having a "so over it" sort of a day!
@NSRiazat - #phdchat - 2 topics joint first this week in the #poll. Will keep other one of 'The Viva - examining process' as topic for next week.
@Janshs - thanks @NSRiazat #phdchat and all!
@lizith - think I'm taking rest of evening off - see you around - thanks everybody for this evening #phdchat
@Janshs - what the prob with your conclusion? @ai1sa #phdchat s it about selecting what fits your priginal framework or RQs?
@merry30 - That was quick! RT @nsriazat: #phdchat - 8.30pm BST brings us to the end of this week's chat.
@NSRiazat - #phdchat - 2 topics joint first this week in the #poll. Will keep other one of 'The Viva - examining process' as topic for next week.
@Janshs - bye Liz @lizith #phdchat
@sarahthesheepu - #phdchat if anyone wants to see a completed thesis shout and ill send u mine
@jennacondie - I'm defo setting a reminder for #phdchat next week, thanks all :)
@naomi_jacobs - @drjavafox That's a really good idea and I don't know why I haven't been working like that so far. I will do from now on! #phdchat
@sarahthesheepu - @NSRiazat something I can really help with! i do training on viva prep now :D #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @Blues76 @drjavafox @lizith @merry30 @sarahthesheepu @mrgunn @salma_patel ~ thanks for valued contributions to #phdchat tonight.
@ai1sa - @Janshs word limit, @ arguing reality multiple- how then 2 give sufficient detail 2 any area.+ desire 2b brilliant vs functional #phdchat

@NSRiazat - #phdchat - 2 topics came joint first in #poll. Will keep other one of 'The Viva - examining process' as topic Wed 3rd Aug 7.30-8.30pm BST
@NSRiazat - @DraycottMC sometimes we don't realise how reassuring a comment or thought is to others. Always good to drop into #phdchat :)
@NSRiazat - @Batty_Towers: hope you can join us again next week for #phdchat - topic will be 'the viva - the doctoral examining process'. :)

@NSRiazat - @lizith Thanks Liz - have a great (and well deserved) evening off. :) #phdchat
@NSRiazat - #phdchat - am being distracted left right and centre by well meaning people - love how non-phd people don't realise 'I have to study) :)
@NSRiazat - #phdchat - just getting back on track with data analysis/writing etc - so distractions are not good right now. #keepingmomentumgoing #phd
@NSRiazat - 2 topics came joint first in #poll. Will keep other one of 'The Viva - examining process' as topic for Wed 3rd Aug 7.30-8.30pm BST #phdchat
@naomi_jacobs - .@NSRiazat Ooh, interesting. Currently trying to find out about alt viva styles for disabled PhD students, if anyone knows of any! #phdchat
@familysimpson - @drjavafox @janshs @jessgrieser #phdchat what about using versioning software? You can compare the differences between files too.
@LeilaMonaghan - @mark_carrigan Depends but illustrative samples are standard in many fields. Particularly good if they spice up prose #phdchat
@laurapasquini - Canadian universities join global race to spark innovation http://t.co/KHnlUra via @globeandmail #highered #phdchat
@LeilaMonaghan - Thought George RR Martin's distinction between architect & gardener was useful. PhDs need to be designed but we must let in flowers #phdchat
@Rich_Boulton - Postgrads suffer again RT @public_uni Drastic funding cuts for PhDs and Masters http://t.co/0Y2dhFw via @bbceducation #phdchat
@salma_patel - @drjavafox thanks! :) didn't get round to thanking you during the #phdchat
@salma_patel - @sarahthesheepu @nsriazat thanks Sarah for offering to send over your thesis. I'll PM you my email address. #phdchat
@mariapf - "@laurapasquini: Canadian universities join global race to spark innovation http://t.co/KHnlUra via @globeandmail #highered #phdchat"
@salma_patel - @Rich_Boulton what do post doc research cuts look like? Is anyone re-considering staying in academia due to cuts? #phdchat #lovehe
@jennifermjones - We can't have too many people working 'off brand' in a university. Research? Pay your own fees, scrotums. http://rsrch.co/ocUKkI #phdchat
@OrgMotivation - @erikacule It's mixed - they split into sciences and arts/ss sessions for relevant sections. #phdchat
@thesiswhisperer - @Musebrarian excellent. I highly recommend the Becker book for all students, regardless of discipline #phdchat
@JeffreyKeefer - @NSRiazat @jessgrieser @jennacondie What is Twitterfall? #phdchat
@JeffreyKeefer - @naomi_jacobs @jennacondie @NSRiazat @jessgrieser Agreed. I like #scrivener, though it does have a high learning curve #phdchat
@JeffreyKeefer - With all the nifty search engines out there, is a hash tag # still needed to follow things on Twitter? #phdchat #highered
@JeffreyKeefer - @NSRiazat @jessgrieser @jennacondie @lizith I like #Scrivener, though it still has an awkward feel. I do write and take notes in it #phdchat
@JeffreyKeefer - @SarahStewart @davidwees While not writing my thesis on my blog, it is fully integrated into my research http://bit.ly/lAFxSf #phdchat
@JeffreyKeefer - @litreviewhq Agreed, and will look forward to reading about it! #phdchat
@jessgrieser - @jeffreykeefer Also using it to revise a novel at the moment, so I've gotten used to it. @NSRiazat @jennacondie @lizith #phdchat
