'How do researchers choose and narrow down specifically what to study in their PhD?'

#phdchat tweet log - 14th March 2012

@NSRiazat - Welcome to #phdchat - the topic for tonight is "how do researchers choose and narrow down specifically what to study in their PhD #phd

@ai1sa - @aeratcliffe me too just redid my time check ! #phdchat

@NSRiazat - Topic for #phdchat "how do researchers choose and narrow down specifically what to study in their PhD'

@ai1sa - Great question...i am within a hares breath of finishing and still wonder about what i have left out #phdchat

@Lemness - @aeratcliffe I think we are all waiting. thanks for speaking up. #phdchat

@lizith - @HendraAgustian can you be more precise? In what way are you losing it? #phdchat

@lizith - @NSRiazat Hello everybody - just tied up answering a couple of emails - looking forward to what could be interesting discussion #phdchat

@Lemness - @ai1sa that's great that you're almost done. what do you mean about wondering what you've left out? #phdchat

@almutei - #phdchat I guess it depends on how much guidance/freedom the supervisor gives in the beginning.

@ai1sa - Multiple times i have pared it down, sometimes discovery (too much !!! an unwieldy ethics application) #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @NSRiazat ~ have to say I'm final year and still narrowing down my specific topic on a daily basis. #phdchat

@Lemness - this will be so interesting to see what we come up with at #phdchat. I'm guessing that we all have our own process for narrowing our study.

@ai1sa - Also, the guidance i did not want to hear from my colloquium panel #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @ai1sa @aeratcliffe ~ sorry folks. Normally start #phdchat from Blackberry but it's not co-operating so had to turn laptop on instead. :-)

@Lemness - That was how it was for me. RT @almutei: #phdchat I guess it depends on how much guidance/freedom the supervisor gives in the beginning.

@ai1sa - @NSRiazat lol final days of final draft and am still paring it down #phdchat

@ifeoluwadebo - I think the 1st think is interest and as you dig deep into literature you identify 'untapped' niche that leads to more curiosity #phdchat

@lauracowen - @almutei I have loads of freedom, which is great but makes it difficult to decide what to do! (2nd yr part-time) #phdchat

@lizith - @almutei for me it's been an iterative process with a major and a minor sideways move #phdchat

@aeratcliffe - I've been reading in the general areas. One approach was hinted at and recently reminded of. Think it is it! #phdchat

@aeratcliffe - @NSRiazat No worries. I just thought I might have messed up. #phdchat

@almutei - @ai1sa What's a colloquium panel? #phdchat

@Lemness - One of the things that worked out was to chase down authors until no other new authors were coming up - #phdchat How did you guys do it?

@ai1sa - @Lemness i still have flashbacks...data stories untold, and then i remember, i will get a post doc life, i can write them in that #phdchat

@Lemness - @lauracowen you have freedom, but does your advisor give you any direction? #phdchat

@almutei - @ifeoluwadebo Oh yes, it does include a lot of reading. #phdchat

@ai1sa - @Lemness yes, there is a saturation, and when what is read becomes more of the same #phdchat

@ClaretCarly - @almutei Mine's an extension of my MSc so the project was mine to begin with, it's changed slightly due to reading and SV's input #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @Lemness ~ for me it was themes. Once the same themes were returning in the liteature review as opposed to Authors. #phdchat

@NSRiazat - Welcome to #phdchat - topic is "how do researchers choose and narrow down specifically what to study in their PhD'

@NSRiazat - Can people describe their process from going from theme to focus questions? How do you narrow down to questions? #phdchat

@SueFolley - @NSRiazat me too. You have to make decisions what to leave out once you have your done your analysis etc #phdchat

@Lemness - @ai1sa yes - just get done. the rest can get done later. congratulations for being so close to being finished. #phdchat

@AmandaMichelle - narrowing research is intriguing to me, what with my 1st year status & all. i came "knowing" what i wanted, then i learned things #phdchat

@ai1sa - @almutei australian. other countries have chairs and phd panels insted. My uni does early oral defence/colloquium pre data collect #phdchat

@SteveCooke - @Lemness I didn't - eventually I realised I should focus on addressing arguments rather than being inclusive of authors. #phdchat

@lauracowen - @Lemness Yes and she gives me ideas of where my thoughts could go in terms of a PhD. #phdchat

@SueFolley - @lauracowen agreed - I had total freedom too -which I think makes it harder! :) #phdchat

@lizith - @ai1sa @lemness I'm listing all the stuff I could have done/could do to include in final chapter :) - there's lots! #phdchat

@Lemness - @nsriazat that's interesting. for my study, the themes continued on. at some point, you just have to be done so that we can write. #phdchat

@Lemness - Yes - there's no way to get around reading so much. RT @almutei: @ifeoluwadebo Oh yes, it does include a lot of reading. #phdchat

@ai1sa - @NSRiazat an evolution in data writing and conclusions; which tells the greater story, or the newer/different knowledge #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @ClaretCarly @almutei ~ mine is also an extension of my MA.Ed degree. #phdchat

@almutei - @Lemness @lauracowen I have heard of a supervisor sending his student off for a month to find a topic .#phdchat

@SueFolley - I think you narrow down as you go - start with wider idea but narrow when you see what comes out of your data #phdchat

@ai1sa - @lizith yes i found that also, and i wrote what seemed most important and it coalesced , eventually, curds and whey #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @AmandaMichelle ~ good point re: going from knowing what to study to learning and changing direction. #phdchat

@Lemness - @stevecooke just out of curiosity - what was your topic? I am sure that some topics might lend itself to different approaches #phdchat

@OTEllenN - Narrowed my focus using my research question. Picked out the keywords and stuck with those! Otherwise, too unwieldy. #phdchat

@lizith - #phdchat I drew some spray diags of themes & links and one theme was picked up by sup'rs as interesting & I've run with that - read lots 1st

@Lemness - @lauracowen I think I had the same experience. Eventually, I just stopped looking and started writing. #phdchat

@SueFolley - I found it hard to narrow it down to one topic- had a big list of possible topics I was interested i, - choosing one was difficult #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @Lemness ~ am trying to cut down on the reading now and starting writing up. Have to draw the line somewhere in terms of new ideas. #phdchat

@almutei - @SueFolley Also known as "the slow realisation that you are not going to solve all the problems of your field in 3-4 years." #phdchat

@lizith - At the moment, the focus is almost more on methodology than findings - findings interesting but method has some originality #phdchat

@aeratcliffe - The general topic has remained pretty constant. Narrowing it down has been the most difficult. #phdchat

@Lemness - @lauracowen confidence knocked because of what? #phdchat

@ai1sa - @lizith myvery early experience when i began with 3 topics any of them big enough. My sup asked me which one was 'sexy' #phdchat

@SueFolley - @almutei ha ha - yes totally :) #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @OTEllenN ~ liking the idea of keywords being used to narrow down the focus #phdchat

@SteveCooke - @Lemness It was on the ethics of animal liberation - breaking the law in defene of animals (moral and political philosophy) #phdchat

@AmandaMichelle - ooooh... RT @lemness: One of the things that worked out was to chase down authors until no other new authors were coming up - #phdchat

@Lemness - @almutei with some direction? #phdchat I definitely took more than a month to figure it out.

@LitProfSuz - #phdchat I had a specific idea of what I wanted to study. But, a different research site offered itself, so I changed. Serendipity.

@eritskes - This is where I am. RT @SueFolley Had a big list of possible topics I was interested in - choosing one was difficult #phdchat

@Lemness - @otellenn That's great insight. A great question helps so much. #phdchat

@AmandaMichelle - something that i've just run into is my need to drastically take in MOAR INFO just for the basics. it's quite overwhelming. #phdchat

@ai1sa - @almutei just as well we do have lifetimes! phd need "only overwhelm the small space" (seth godin) The rest can absorb our futures #phdchat

@SueFolley - @eritskes it is tough as is a huge decision, which really only you can decide -though do take advice as may be some obvious factors #phdchat

@EmmaBurnettx - MT @NSRiazat: the topic for tonight is "how do researchers choose and narrow down specifically what to study in their PhD" #phd #phdchat

@OTEllenN - @NSRiazat I had to! Question is how knowledge is translated to inform & legitimize practice...lots to discuss and unpack. #phdchat

@Lemness - @nsriazat yes, that's excellent. the best dissertation is a completed one. #phdchat

@SueFolley - @NSRiazat that is good - plenty to publish in future papers - but yes tough deciding what to cut out and keep in :) #phdchat

@LitProfSuz - #phdchat- Been advised to choose smthing I'm passionate @ & in contrast NOT to do smthng I'm passionate @ cuz I'll come to loathe it.

@Lemness - @stevecooke very interesting. that would focus more on developing arguments. great insight. #phdchat

@EmmaBurnettx - @eritskes @SueFolley It's so hard because you know you have to live with it (and love) it for a long time! #phdchat

@EmmaBurnettx - @LitProfSuz 100% for sure!!! #phdchat

@almutei - @Lemness Not sure. #secondhandknowledge #phdchat

@OTEllenN - @Lemness @nsriazat Agree! Used to think it would be the most signif contribution ever...now I just want it finished! :) #phdchat

@lizith - @LitProfSuz It's got to be something you have enough interest in to be passionate abt for the long haul though #phdchat

@SueFolley - @EmmaBurnettx exactly! You must still like it in 5 years - and be related to your career aspirations too I suppose #phdchat

@ai1sa - one stage i went too small. My supervsr suggested the umbrella approach, studying change positions me in a world that never dates. #phdchat

@Lemness - @lauracowen that's the thing original research-not to much direction to figure those things out. At least you know where not 2 look #phdchat

@lauracowen - @Lemness @almutei Me too! Mnth in wilderness wouldn't work for me. Tricky being p-time - sometimes meet up a lot but sometimes not. #phdchat

@ifeoluwadebo - Using my case as an example .. My interest have always been in areas of electronic health info. Sys and its sustainability ... #phdchat

@SueFolley - @Lemness I think you do have to draw the line - you can revisit the literature nearer to the end as well :) #phdchat

@lizith - @OTEllenN @Lemness @nsriazat I understand that feeling - just want it done so I can get on with other bits of life #phdchat

@almutei - @one_tim_martin @suefolley That's why there should be guidance from supervisor. I only have 4 years! #phdchat

@lauracowen - @Lemness @stevecooke Yes, that sounds like a good idea (arguments rather than authors). #phdchat

@Lemness - @lauracowen yes, i'm a big proponent of "thinking" time from "writing" time. I am not able to do both at the same time. #phdchat

@ai1sa - @lauracowen i spent 1/4 of my phd time in wilderness...inot wasted. Made me clearer, why this/not that, both on topic & method #phdchat

@SueFolley - @almutei I am part-time - so have up to 7 - am in my 5th year now! :) #phdchat

@AmandaMichelle - !!! RT @emmaburnettx: @eritskes @SueFolley It's so hard because you know you have to live with it (and love) it for a long time! #phdchat

@AmandaMichelle - #aimfordone RT @lemness: @NSRiazat yes, that's excellent. the best dissertation is a completed one. #phdchat

@ifeoluwadebo - ...after much reading and advice from my sup, am narrowing it to exploring the factors that could lead to the sustainability #phdchat

@EmmaBurnettx - Main lesson for me at beginning was read, read, read and read more. Take lots of notes and don't try to hurry through this process #phdchat

@SueFolley - @AmandaMichelle well at least not hate it anyway :) @EmmaBurnettx #phdchat

@lizith - @SueFolley @Lemness yup - not a case lit ever being done and dusted - keep having to dig back into it! #phdchat

@Lemness - @otellenn yes. time to finish. there's always time after to write the rest of it up. #phdchat

@ai1sa - @AmandaMichelle YES and then letting go becomes a whole new concern! #phdchat

@NSRiazat - Welcome to #phdchat - topic is "how do researchers choose and narrow down specifically what to study in their PhD'

@NSRiazat - Welcome to #phdchat - the topic for tonight is "how do researchers choose and narrow down specifically what to study in their PhD #phd

@LitProfSuz - @Lemness @nsriazat My first prof said that! Done is best. When I talk w/ grad peers, I keep reminding them. It isn't a magnum opus.#phdchat

@OTEllenN - @lizith @Lemness @nsriazat I have so many fun goals for post-submission...keeps me focused on finishing! #phdchat

@lauracowen - @Lemness Yes. Also, think I've genuinely learnt a lot and should prob trust my judgement more now than when I started. :) #phdchat

@Lemness - @lizith yes, being able to write later without time constraints - feels so good. #phdchat

@SueFolley - @iFreulein it should be more obvious when you do the analysis -look for what is interesting or what you have a lot of evidence for #phdchat

@heather_roche - @ai1sa that's impressive - seems most people only have problems narrowing! or am I wrong? #phdchat

@qui_oui - I knew my topic before I arrived at PhD program; refined the details later after asking advice & reading #PhDchat

@EmmaBurnettx - @ai1sa @lauracowen I agree this is time well spent it can be frustrating thinking you are not progressing, but you are... #phdchat

@lizith - #phdchat my focus and everything connected is completely different from what I set out to do - sometimes wish early ideas had worked but

@OTEllenN - @Lemness My supervisors call that 'post-doc'...at least they're both confident I will submit! :) #phdchat

@Lemness - @litprofsuz yes. although it is hard to get going once you're done. it has been for me, but it's going again. #phdchat

@LitProfSuz - @Lemness @lauracowen #phdchat In writing group, I remind people to schedule the thinking time too, when looking at how long a project takes.

@NSRiazat - Still working on narrowing my focus questions down #phdchat

@SueFolley - @one_tim_martin full time? Then yes I think so- if I can do itin 5 yrs p/t in evenings and weekends & with 3 kids then u can do it #phdchat

@almutei - @one_tim_martin @suefolley Achievable, maybe. I wouldn't count on it. If it all works immediately it's not research. #phdchat

@Lemness - @lauracowen that is part of the process - it's so much more than writing. it's confidence in yourself #phdchat

@MisaimedBrain - @lizith There's always later work to follow up on early ideas. I hope to return to some early thoughts. #phdchat

@NSRiazat - In grounded theory methodology some of the focus comes from the the themes found in the data and the new knowledge they bring #phdchat

@ai1sa - supervisor said put a picture of the place i want to be when i finish up on the wall. pt 1 #phdchat

@ai1sa - Put a box under the picture for the new ideas for a post doc life. pt2 #phdchat

@LitProfSuz - @OTEllenN @lizith @Lemness #phdchat Best advise given @ other ideas - find a consistent way to write these down for posterity. Don't forget!

@ClaretCarly - @SueFolley @one_tim_martin My funding runs out after 3 years, excellent motivation! So far I think I'm on track #phdchat

@lauracowen - @ai1sa True. Actually, once I decided to sit and think rather than feel I had to produce sthg, it became clearer. So I'd agree. #phdchat

@heather_roche - @nsriazat yes, this approach was something i found useful - i found it increased focus rather than widening the umbrella strangely #phdchat

@SueFolley - @lizith very true - ongoing process and I am finding I am doing a lot of reading in the writing up phase! #phdchat

@lizith - @ai1sa don't think that would work for me - place I want to be is nowhere near a book or computer! #phdchat

@ai1sa - my question also squirmed, writhed and morphed. mapping these changes became part of discussions and final chapter #phdchat

@lizgloyn - #phdchat This seems like as good a time as any to re-share my post on the proper care and feeding of academic otters: http://t.co/CYpn0f4E

@LitProfSuz - @ifeoluwadebo #phdchat Agreed. I planned for middle school, but 2 elem teachers offered their classrooms. Now researching smthng different

@lizgloyn - #phdchat About ways to cope with the ideas that won't fit into the thesis.

@heather_roche - Really only had a general idea at first. Was surprised how focused (and more passionate) interests became in final year #phdchat

@qui_oui - I find that even having narrowed the project, the questions shift/change depending on angle from which I'm looking at the study #PhDchat

@ai1sa - @lizith nor is mine! doesnt need to be. its a vinyard with a sculpture trailnorth of auckland at Matakana, http://t.co/HxF4KVHD #phdchat

@SueFolley - @OTEllenN tough going - at least my kids are a bit older - but still demand attention :) #phdchat

@lizith - @lizgloyn I'll take a look at that later :) #phdchat

@OTEllenN - @LitProfSuz @lizith @Lemness Great advice - thank you. #phdchat

@ai1sa - The thesis is not your lifework. Another good one from my excellent supervisor #phdchat

@SueFolley - @one_tim_martin I think you can do it if you are motivated, driven and can work on it full time for 3 years :) Good luck! #phdchat

@SueFolley - @ClaretCarly yes that is good motivation indeed - good luck! :) #phdchat

@almutei - @OTEllenN @SueFolley I have serious respect for anyone doing this with kids and/or a job as well. #phdchat

@EmmaBurnettx - @SueFolley: @one_tim_martin I absolutely agree! #phdchat

@LitProfSuz - @lizgloyn Love that phrase "academic otters". I'm going to use that with my writing group. #phdchat

@lizith - @ai1sa that does look like something to look forward to #phdchat

@cgirvan - #phdchat but slightly more usefully methodology helped me - exploratory case study first to narrow down research Qs for subsequent study

@aeratcliffe - It is nice realising how others have also experienced challenges. #phdchat

@SueFolley - @almutei it can be tough at time but job and kids gives you perspective :) Hopefully worth it in the end #phdchat

@LitProfSuz - #phdchat What about the advise to have a narrow research agenda? I love investigating diverse issues, but concerned @ job talk later.

@Lemness - @otellenn that's amazing. I'm working on some book proposals - out of my research. we'll see #phdchat

@lizith - @cgirvan how near are you to completion? I guess you can't be too far off? #phdchat

@almutei - @one_tim_martin Of course. Optimism forward! Good luck! :-) #phdchat

@ai1sa - @LitProfSuz thats why i positioned my very weird topic inside of a change agenda #phdchat

@Lemness - @litprofsuz that is so good. what do you tell them to do or "thinking' time? #phdchat

@LottaFriedner - @lizgloyn Thank you! I think that's a useful idea. #phdchat

@SueFolley - @one_tim_martin No harm in aiming high :) Be realistic though as everything takes longer than you anticipate! #phdchat

@ai1sa - @lauracowen i find it constructive 4 me personally to reframe the not obviously progressing time as perculating the ideas, mulling. #phdchat

@lizith - @LitProfSuz some early advice was if going wide, choose a narrow lens to view it - which is what I've done #phdchat

@Lemness - @qui_oui so do you adjust the writing or stick with your original questions? #phdchat

@ai1sa - @SueFolley YES Everything takes longer than anticipated #phdchat

@SueFolley - I am getting a lot of spam tweets tonight - are other #phdchat participants getting the same or just me? :)

@SteveCooke - @one_tim_martin @almutei @suefolley 3 years is perfectly acheivable - I did it whilst working full time for 1st 2.5yrs. #phdchat

@ifeoluwadebo - True. There's life after thesis RT @ai1sa: The thesis is not your lifework. Another good one from my excellent supervisor #phdchat

@OTEllenN - @ai1sa @lauracowen Exactly what I did! Really helped me to feel like I was always engaged in the process in some way. #phdchat

@lizith - @SueFolley no more than usual coming my way #phdchat

@SueFolley - @ai1sa it is a lot worse than usual - had to block and report about 5 different twitter accounts in the last 20 mins... #phdchat

@SueFolley - @SteveCooke that is very good going!! #phdchat

@SueFolley - @lizith just some of us then :) #phdchat

@ClaretCarly - @SueFolley Thanks :-) #phdchat

@ai1sa - when im mulling theres always something else to do, like brain dead task of tidying endnote library, cleaning up ref punctuation #phdchat

@lizith - @SueFolley no doubt they'll come after me later! #phdchat

@LottaFriedner - @lauracowen I had same experience. Did a mental start-over w new lit and now feel I'm back on track. #phdchat

@qui_oui - @Lemness try to take in new things and adapt the project as the come up, I think. It isn't static, but it has boundaries #PhDchat

@SueFolley - @lizith lol - I'll send 'em round :)) #phdchat

@nnenna - @ifeoluwadebo @ai1sa Michael Beaud, who wrote a guide to Thesis in French starts with "La thse est un travail" 'A thesis is a job" #PhDchat

@lizith - @SueFolley no I'd rather you didn't :) #phdchat

@SueFolley - @lizith spoilsport :) #phdchat

@SteveCooke - @SueFolley I was motivated by the need to feed my kids & pay the mortgage - extra years would have been expensive. #phdchat

@SueFolley - @SteveCooke yes I can see how motivating that would be! I am lucky in that respect -already have job as p/t & Uni paying my fees :) #phdchat

@ai1sa - @SteveCooke mine was slower, max time without taking extra. Motivated by staying sane :) #phdchat

@Lemness - @litprofsuz yes, that's good insight. #phdchat.

@ArberBorix - Paid a visit to the @uvic bookstore. Books are so ostentatiously expensive! Left at once to never return. #yyj #phdchat

@ifeoluwadebo - @ifeoluwadebo @ai1sa "La thse est un travail" 'A thesis is a job" ... *that will be completed* #phdchat

@rjhogue - @ArberBorix in my undergrad days the uvic bookstore was your only choice for textbooks! #phdchat

@LitProfSuz - @Lemness #phdchat Thinking includes talking out ideas,sketching models,outlining.Great book-Stretching Exercises for Qualitative Researchers

@cgirvan - @lizith Can you measure distance to PhD completion? #phdchat

@LottaFriedner - #phdchat I am writing up now and to me, that's when topic really narrows. Red threads suddenly emerge and they're rarely where I thought.

@lizith - @cgirvan not exactly, but I know I have to submit by end of September :) #phdchat

@ai1sa - @cgirvan when the time is up or the word limit reached or one has had enough #phdchat

@ifeoluwadebo - @nnenna @ai1sa "La thse est un travail" 'A thesis is a job" ... *that will be completed* #phdchat

@ai1sa - @LottaFriedner nice analogy #phdchat

@lizith - @ai1sa @cgirvan all assuming you haven't expired first! #phdchat

@SueFolley - @ai1sa I had enough a long time ago - but have to had to carry on as thesis not finished :)) #phdchat

@ai1sa - @LitProfSuz not necessarily, nice if it is Each of mine (presentations/publications helped me clarify, they couldnt stand as chs. #phdchat

@lauracowen - @LitProfSuz I find presenting forces me to clarify to myself so that I can speak clearly to others. Very useful exercise. #phdchat

@jswann - @JuditK And of Twitter friends in same situation #phdchat

@LottaFriedner - @SueFolley @ai1sa @cgirvan @lizith For me it'll be finished when funding runs out... #phdchat

@lizith - @ai1sa @LitProfSuz probably varies with focus of thesis - mine has been more clarifying than chapters, but useful nevertheless #phdchat

@LitProfSuz - @lauracowen Right-conference present wasn't enough for chapter, but forced me to think thru the chapter & got feedback #phdchat

@SueFolley - @iFreulein that's a shame if it slows you down - but at least you have plenty of stuff to be getting on with :) #phdchat

@crcassoc - Over 200k in Awards open now from Academy of Science http://t.co/HQlIuTRw #phdchat

@drkellypage - @NSRiazat advice from experienced colleagues in your field plus what makes strongest contribution (instinct and passion helps) #phdchat

@OTEllenN - @lauracowen @LitProfSuz Presenting also helped me clarify & consolidate my thinking so included in thesis as appendices. #phdchat

@ai1sa - i found 3 minute thesis competition really helpful in tightening toward conclusions while looking at data collect phase. #phdchat

@Lemness - @JeffLangley @philipnation there was #phdchat today. Its the most that i telweet all week.

@lauracowen - @drkellypage @NSRiazat Yes, discussing with others is also very useful. #phdchat

@qui_oui - @Lemness have to choose coherent examples from within the case study; examples have emerged over course of the study #phdchat

@lizith - @iFreulein @suefolley what is the contract with your uni - we are meant to get at least an hour su'n/mth + comments on work #phdchat

@lizith - @ifreulein @suefolley might be worth checking - I know sup'rs are under pressure but sounds like some action needed somewhere #phdchat

@Lemness - @qui_oui yes, as i read everyone's tweets tonight, the type of study we do guides how we narrow down our focus. #phdchat

@ai1sa - that was an hour well spent, thoroughly enjoyed the company #phdchat

@NSRiazat - Thanks to everyone for taking part in #phdchat tonight. A good and useful discussion had by all. :-)

@lizith - @ai1sa yes it's been a good evening - now going to have an hour in front of TV watching Master Chef #phdchat

@SteveCooke - @cgirvan @lizith I worked out how many words I needed to write per week to finish on time & set a slightly higher no. as my target #phdchat

@almutei - Same here. Have a nice evening!RT @ai1sa: that was an hour well spent, thoroughly enjoyed the company #phdchat

@AmandaMichelle - darn... i hate that i can't dedicate my weds afternoons to #phdchat since school started. i never can keep up!

@OTEllenN - Thanks #phdchat-ers for another awesome chat! Good luck out there.

@almutei - @SteveCooke That only works if words are your target and you don't have to find a bug in your code/make some experiment work. #phdchat

@lizith - @iFreulein @suefolley no but remember your contract is with uni not sup'r & you can always complain if not getting what paying for #phdchat

@SteveCooke - @almutei that is true. Luckily I wasn't in such a situation. #phdchat

@cgirvan - @lizith funded and have to submit by end of the year but can I/should I submit early? #phdchat

@SueFolley - @NSRiazat thanks for hosting - it was an interesting chat tonight :) #phdchat

@cgirvan - @ai1sa maybe I'm a freak but I feel like I could happily do this forever #phdchat Not masterchef though, can boil soup dry!

@SteveCooke - @cgirvan if the thesis is ready & your supervisors agree (& you won't lose funding) submit early - viva can take months. #phdchat

@SteveCooke - @cgirvan you usually have to get special permission to submit significantly early though. #phdchat

@Lemness - @litprofsuz great insight. it could work for quantitative researchers - if they are social enough. :) #phdchat

@HendraAgustian - @lizith The file is there, but when I open it, it says the library is broken. #EndNote #PhDchat

@lizith - @HendraAgustian sounds like you need a chat with nice folk on EN helpdesk - there is facility for repairing library #endnote #phdchat

@jenn_melon - @HendraAgustian #EndNote #PhDchat In the Tools menu there's a option to Recover Library, have you tried that?
