'Referencing Tools and Software'

#phdchat tweet log - 18th April 2012

@NSRiazat - Welcome to #phdchat - the topic for tonight is 'referencing tools and software'.

@Comprof1 - @srossmktg glad to hear it #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @NSRiazat So like Zotero or Word reference? #phdchat

@naomi_jacobs - @NSRiazat Good topic! I'm stuck somewhere between Mendeley (wonderful) & EndNote (useful at writing stage). They don't mix well. #phdchat

@gtombs - Looking forward to tonight's #phdchat topic on referencing tools and software - 3 years in and I've still not found one that works for me!

@NSRiazat - @Comprof1 ~ a general session about to do referencing, what styles people use and how best to keep referencing up to date. #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @naomi_jacobs @NSRiazat I had some problems with endnote interacting with the new word #phdchat

@lizith - @NSRiazat not sure I'll have much to say tonight - I've stuck with EndNote after early flirtations with zotero and mendeley #phdchat

@Nicky_Garland - anybody still bother with manual referencing or use referencing software? #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @NSRiazat I actually ended up with binders with printed articles and files under "dissertation" and other subtopics on my computer #phdchat

@ai1sa - @Nicky_Garland i do no manual referencing, no hard copies of articles #phdchat

@NSRiazat - I didn't use referencing software - was easier to maintain an up to date 'Bibliography' on MS Word as I went along. #phdchat

@lizith - @Nicky_Garland with getting on for 3000 refs in my database, software was the only way for me #phdchat

@NSRiazat - #phdchat ~ Quick start guide to ENDNOTE - http://t.co/1Jv0MjSP

@Comprof1 - I also used delicious and now I've been using twitter more often to save references. #phdchat

@naomi_jacobs - @mrgunn Importing is difficult. I end up with multiple refs if I import entire library regularly, or I miss refs I do one at a time #phdchat

@silvertje - @NSRiazat Ha! I thought today's #phdchat was about 'How to reference tools and software in your paper.' :)

@gtombs - I'm a recent #zotero convert. Love #mendeley but just too much for the work computer to handle! #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @Comprof1 ~ how does delicious work. Have heard about that software but not sure what it actually does. #phdchat

@lizith - @ai1sa @nicky_garland I occasionally print something out to read when I get tired of the monitor, but much the same #phdchat

@naomi_jacobs - @Comprof1 I like #delicious for keeping track of webpages to read later, but not for academic refs #phdchat

@NSRiazat - #phdchat ~ Quick start guide to Ref Manager ~ http://t.co/ONVf39tQ

@opendna - I'm a fan of @Zotero's Firefox plugin, desktop app & word processor plugins. The cloud backup is beta, but I don't mind (Dropbox). #PhDchat

@Nicky_Garland - @Comprof1 How do you use twitter for referencing? #phdchat

@ai1sa - other types of referencing: i use diigolet for bookmarking & grouping newspapers & web pages , additional to copy in endnote #phdchat

@silvertje - @NSRiazat In the past I have used Zotero but now I use Papers2 (also keeps al my PDFs) in combination with manual work #phdchat

@NSRiazat - #phdchat - had a tutorial on 'RefWorks' at our university library but found it was easier to do my own using Word as I went along.

@Nicky_Garland - @gtombs Ive been using zotero for about 6 months, i quite like it, easy to pick up refs, had some teething probs too tho #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @NSRiazat It automatically captures url and many times info about web source. Has a notes section and tags. #phdchat

@RichJ23 - @NSRiazat I find mendeley to be much better than anything else if you are working across different platforms. #phdchat

@lizith - @Comprof1 @nicky_garland books live on shelves - otherwise all electronic and books increasingly on Kindle rather than shelf #phdchat

@salma_patel - @Nicky_Garland I use Mendeley and I'm a great fan of it. I'd also recommend Zotero. Mendeley guide here: http://t.co/vpQ6Dpwb #phdchat

@ai1sa - previous to diigolet i used delicious; useful for tracing what those i read are reading ! #phdchat

@lizith - @naomi_jacobs @comprof1 I tend to put webpages in Evernote #phdchat

@NSRiazat - I wasn't aware that there were so many different referencing styles. Can't copy and paste references into own work. #phdchat

@ai1sa - I also use a site called librarything, again useful for seeing what the people i am reading are reading #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @Nicky_Garland I use #dissertation and RT and "favorite" so I can find the reference later. I may also include a note to help ref #phdchat

@Nicky_Garland - @Comprof1 Thats a good idea, never thought of that! #phdchat

@opendna - It may be a bit off-topic for "referencing tools", but I use @worldcatorg to download citations for books. #PhDchat

@aeratcliffe - @NSRiazat An advantage of software is the ability to switch referencing styles for publications. #phdchat

@salma_patel - #phdchat My experience with using #Mendeley http://t.co/Di2xyNHQ and a guide to using Mendeley http://t.co/vpQ6Dpwb

@NSRiazat - Useful tools for #phd ~ #phdchat http://t.co/7COkV6Zx

@Comprof1 - @NSRiazat New delicious also allows you to build stacks on related issues but doesn't seem to be as user friendly #phdchat

@Nicky_Garland - @salma_patel Thanks ill have a look, not 100% happy with zotero but good for now, especially with pages and pages of refs #phdchat

@salma_patel - @aeratcliffe @nsriazat definitely! Especially when you are writing papers, in one click of a button! Such a time saver ... #phdchat

@mrgunn - Mendeley 1.5-preview w/ many improvements to the Word integration is available now. Wait for 1.5.1 if you're on Mac. #phdchat

@salma_patel - @aeratcliffe @nsriazat and plus it's a brilliant way to organise articles into categories so that much easier to find & use. #phdchat

@gtombs - @nicky_garland I've not started the arduous task of transferring everything over yet I must admit. What probs did you encounter? #phdchat

@Nicky_Garland - @salma_patel @aeratcliffe @nsriazat V useful as well if you're not familiar with ref style, although I always like to double check #phdchat

@lizith - I felt it was best to find something I was happy with and commit to it until thesis done and then think again if I want to #phdchat

@MisaimedBrain - @salma_patel Yes, I use Mendeley too. Worked out very nicely for me! #phdchat

@ai1sa - i love having ebook copies of books, or use amazon or similar when it lets me do a word search for specific info inside of a book #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @aeratcliffe Have you used the new Zotero? I hear there is a downloadable version now.#phdchat

@SueFolley - I use Endnote for my referencing. I have done them manually at the moment but all stored in Endnote so I can use for consistency #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @lizith ~ my references are taking up too much word count at the moment. Have to cull them down to a more manageable number. #phdchat

@Nicky_Garland - @gtombs Getting ref style to work, the forum help is very good though, had an answer on a sun within hours #phdchat

@martin_eve - I've used Zotero for whole thesis and it's been great. Use ZotFile extension for even more goodness! #phdchat

@ai1sa - i use endnote because my workplace provides it, library teaches it, good online support also, but it has not been without tears #phdchat

@aeratcliffe - @Comprof1 No, I haven't looked at Zotero for some time. Happy with Papers2, EndNote, and did play with Mendeley. #phdchat

@salma_patel - @NSRiazat Can you change them to number based referencing? You'll probably save on words. #phdchat @lizith

@ai1sa - @NSRiazat mine too! #phdchat (refs excessive in my word count)

@lizith - @NSRiazat I reckon mine will be about 10% of word count #phdchat

@silvertje - @Comprof1 @aeratcliffe I stopped using Zotero because it is Firefox only and their downloadable version is horrible :( #phdchat

@Nicky_Garland - @martin_eve What is the zotfile extension? #phdchat

@planetchampion - @salma_patel @NSRiazat @lizith Number based referencing is only for the illiterate #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @gtombs ~ I ended up not using any referencing software and am in the final months now. #phdchat

@gtombs - @nicky_garland that's good to know - thanks! My uni has its own ref system so not looking forward to facing that... #phdchat

@salma_patel - @Nicky_Garland Out of curiosity, why are you not happy with Zotero? #phdchat

@martin_eve - @Nicky_Garland renames files and auto organizes into folders on disk. Also shares with mobile devices. #phdchat

@planetchampion - @salma_patel @NSRiazat @lizith PS Number referencing doesn't work for qual research as it doesn't help the reader know what author #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @martin_eve That's the new version right? that you can download on your computer? How is it for non electronic resources? #phdchat

@lizith - @salma_patel: @NSRiazat Can you change them to number based referencing? ... save on words. #phdchat >> think that depends on discipline

@ai1sa - @planetchampion rubbish, it is a system commonly used in disciplines where there is heavy use of dates #phdchat

@salma_patel - @martin_eve Hahaha we need a neutral one :-) @gtombs @mrgunn #phdchat

@jenfoolery - If you are looking for a very specific feature, Wikipedia's comparison chart is great too. #phdchat http://t.co/lukAlsY1

@gtombs - @nsriazat I have a big word doc b/c my uni has its own style. Thesis due in a few months so will just use both, I think. Easier! #phdchat

@salma_patel - @gtombs @nicky_garland Which reference system does your uni have? #phdchat

@lizith - @planetchampion @salma_patel @nsriazat that was what I suspected - I know I hate numerical refs #phdchat

@martin_eve - Problem for Mendeley/Zotero/Endnote is, in big project, no interoperability. Can't easily switch. Should standardize. #phdchat

@planetchampion - @ai1sa yes that's right -but it doesn't work for qualitative #phdchat

@gtombs - @salma_patel @Nicky_Garland Coventry Harvard. Similar to Harvard but just different enough to be difficult for referencing software #phdchat

@martin_eve - @Comprof1 I catalogue all my resources there: books, conference papers, all offline. Citation engine is great. #phdchat

@mrgunn - @salma_patel @martin_eve @gtombs @jenfoolery I know, but the Wikipedia one is a mess and @mfenner hasn't updated his. #phdchat

@salma_patel - @gtombs @nsriazat But I'm sure you can create your own style in Mendeley or other software? @mrgunn #phdchat

@ai1sa - @planetchampion arguable, the discipline sets the referencing style sometimes this will cross qual/quant boundaries #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @gtombs @lizith ~ very good point as most universities insist that their preferred styles are used for referencing. #phdchat

@silvertje - Download your citation style (can be used/imported in software like Zotero, Mendeley, Papers) here #phdchat: http://t.co/oxOV9a13

@naomi_jacobs - @mrgunn Mendeley's styles aren't flexible enough. Can't edit refs in the way I want. It's great for note taking etc but not writing #phdchat

@lizith - @gtombs @salma_patel @nicky_garland you can edit styles and create your own in EN - not difficult #phdchat

@salma_patel - @lizith @planetchampion @nsriazat It is perfectly acceptable in some disciplines. Seen many journal papers written like that. #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @lizith @planetchampion @salma_patel ~ not a fan of number references either - not in presentation requirements for my university. #phdchat

@planetchampion - @ai1sa True but the numerical system is not reader friendly. If I see Checkland 1981 I know the book if I see [56] I haven't a clue #phdchat

@opendna - @martin_eve Switching between Mendeley/Zotero/Endnote requires exporting to a DB standard like Bibtex or RIS. (Zotero offers 12) #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @salma_patel @lizith @planetchampion ~ think it depends on the style the University has specified rather than what we choose? #phdchat

@salma_patel - @martin_eve that would be v useful. But at least the license isn't based on academic institution, because that is such a pain. #phdchat

@planetchampion - @salma_patel @lizith @nsriazat Yes I have said that -tho I stick by my comment Numbers used in discip where they don't read much #phdchat

@srossmktg - Sorry, just got in. What's the topic? #phdchat

@martin_eve - Experience @naomi_jacobs describes was also mine. Mendeley not so good for Hums/SS? Admittedly, I haven't tried a v recent version #phdchat

@ai1sa - @planetchampion its just a matter of what you are used to, equal opposite argument is the names in the middle break the flow... #phdchat

@planetchampion - @NSRiazat @salma_patel @lizith Absolutely -always do what the uni/superviser says #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @Comprof1 @gtombs @lizith ~ I just used the style specified and then set up my own template using MS Word from day 1 of starting. #phdchat

@lizith - @naomi_jacobs @comprof1 I had a problem with the clipper in Firefox at one time, but seems to work OK now #phdchat

@ai1sa - @planetchampion oh please law, history, english all read lots !!! #phdchat

@Comprof1 - Since we're talking about references, anyone have trouble with software and reference styles (i.e. apa)? #phdchat (tryagain)

@Nicky_Garland - @lizith @gtombs @salma_patel Zotero has a bunch of styles, sure something would be similar, not sure u can make ur own tho #phdchat

@lizith - @srossmktg referencing tools #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @planetchampion @lizith ~ good point about sticking with University specifies - otherwise they'll only pick up on it in viva. #phdchat

@srossmktg - @martin_eve @lizith Ah cool. Can't say I'm of much help, I do it the old fashioned way. #phdchat

@salma_patel - @NSRiazat @lizith @planetchampion Thankfully my depart doesn't haven't requirement. I prefer non-numerical but some journals don't #phdchat

@GrahamSpriggs - I use Noodlebib provided by my college. Its a little cumbersome but the drawbacks are minor so am sticking with it for my thesis #phdchat

@aeratcliffe - @silvertje I didn't like Firefox only aspect of Zotero, although understood other browsers coming. #phdchat

@martin_eve - @opendna I mean for in -document citations - I wouldn't re-cite an 80k document! #phdchat

@lizith - @Comprof1 generally I've found EN pretty good, but if in doubt I check style manual. will fix any probs manually in final proofing #phdchat

@ai1sa - Am not using ref system set by my uni. Using apa6th because people of my discipline read &use it. lol they might be readers #phdchat

@laurapasquini - Making the Transition from PhD Student to Corporate Employee LIVING IN LEARNING http://t.co/ZupxjkKO #phdchat

@kiwicito - Crazy! My paper has been accepted for identity track #BAM2012... Very cool. #phdchat

@martin_eve - @aeratcliffe @silvertje Zotero no longer tied to Firefox. Runs standalone. #phdchat

@Carol_Gallo - Which is the best to use in case you need to make up/use a weird citation style specific to a non-listed journal...? #phdchat

@lizith - @kiwicito good stuff - well done #phdchat

@svangalen - Eyeopener @silvertje: Download your citation style in software like Zotero, Mendeley, Papers) here #phdchat: http://t.co/DOQ8OV5F

@srossmktg - @opendna Easypeasy, in my field, everything's a name/year cite. #phdchat

@ai1sa - @lizith yes thats what i experience also. Consistency and discipline appropriate/norms adhered to #phdchat

@lizith - @planetchampion is #theapprentice on early this evening - I usually watch after #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @Carol_Gallo Good question. I'd like to know also. Are there some you can customize? (I find most journals are unique) #phdchat

@opendna - @Comprof1 @NSRiazat @gtombs @lizith The @SFU_library defines thesis templates for our university. Download: http://t.co/QSNJ0hkP #phdchat

@lizith - @srossmktg @opendna but even so, there are lots of variations on author, year with minor differences - got to be careful #phdchat

@lizith - @Comprof1 @Carol_Gallo you can customise and create in EN #phdchat

@silvertje - @martin_eve @aeratcliffe Yes but Zotero's standalone version is horrible and clunky. Stopped using it #phdchat

@srossmktg - @lizith Have yet to see any in our journals, other than not/adding a comma between name/year. #opendna #phdchat

@Comprof1 - Any suggestions on how to change entire completed dissertation/thesis from one style to another? I may need to do so. #phdchat

@martin_eve - @silvertje it is supported now! #phdchat

@opendna - @Carol_Gallo: @Zotero allows you to define & use any weird citation style demanded. The HowTo page: http://t.co/UtJzyfQv #phdchat

@gtombs - @Comprof1 @lizith I did the same as @nsriazat - it's only now I'm trying to build up a Zotero ref list as I start publishing #phdchat

@ai1sa - am annoyed by changes that occurred with apa while doing my PT studies: inserted dois & remove urls to articles #phdchat

@lizith - @srossmktg but how about in-text page referencing, or how many authors in multi-author citations #phdchat

@ai1sa - @Comprof1 if in endnote this is one click away #phdchat

@lizith - @Comprof1 EndNote is your friend - or zotero or mendeley - they all do that for you if used consistently #phdchat

@srossmktg - @lizith Pages arent typically referenced unless quoted (which happens about 10% of the time), multiauthors usually 4+ = et al. #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @srossmktg @lizith Mktg journals often will have slight differences (capitalizations, pg #, issue #) and either Uchicago or ama #phdchat

@lizith - @ai1sa I did a custom style when that happened to get what I needed - I think it was when APA6 arrived the prob occurred #phdchat

@mrgunn - I storified a discussion some humanities scholars had last night about ref mgrs: http://t.co/1NxhoMQQ #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @lizith I didn't (computer crashed so new software). Guess I'll have to do it manually. #phdchat

@lizith - @Comprof1 if you plan to do more writing, might be worth setting up an online ref manager - may save time longer term :) #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @lizith @ai1sa Change in APA is why I'm now set to revise 200 references by hand! That and computer crash. #phdchat

@opendna - Templates. I did that. http://t.co/QSNJ0hkP MT @Comprof1 ...how to change entire completed dissertation from one style to another? #phdchat

@ai1sa - @Comprof1 when i dont have new thoughts or am perculating ideas, thats when i do endnote/referencing tidy ups #phdchat

@modernscientist - And Sente RT @mrgunn: A community-supported library of citation styles: http://t.co/ypcNTxPu these work in Zotero, Mendeley, Papers #phdchat

@mrgunn - @Carol_Gallo For those weird "orphan" citation styles you can modify an existing style. Mendeley et al also working on CSL editor. #phdchat

@lizith - @modernscientist is Sente multi=platform or just Mac? There is also BookEnds for Mac @mrgunn #phdchat

@ai1sa - hard learnings with EN; duplicate & zip it before shifting it anywhere whether external drive / dropbox / updating systems software #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @ai1sa Problem is teaching 3 classes and defense on May 9. If only I had time!!! #phdchat

@ai1sa - @Comprof1 maybe its something you could reasonably pay someone to do? Its not like its your thinking thats outsourced? #phdchat

@lizith - @planetchampion @ai1sa :) diff ten academically perhaps but not necessarily in years (getting bus pass out as evidence) #phdchat

@ai1sa - my current pethate on refs is pdfs from journals that wont let me annotate :( #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @ai1sa That's a possiblitity. especially since past the IRB stage. Thanks for the idea. #phdchat

@planetchampion - @NSRiazat @gtombs @Comprof1 @lizith There speaks someone who is going to finish on time I suspect! #phdchat

@opendna - I'm surprised by how many in #phdchat are using Endnote ($300) and Refworks ($100/year) because they got it for "free" from the library.

@mrgunn - @naomi_jacobs We're working on a citation style editor as an open source project. See http://t.co/lJDiVjbw for a working demo. #phdchat

@naomi_jacobs - @martin_eve Maybe it is a ss/hums problem with Mendeley. I love it for notes & journals so I keep trying to use it with EndNote. #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @ai1sa Can you use a reading devise?bought my ereader b/c have capacity to annotate regardless of format as long as it is on devise #phdchat

@aeratcliffe - @opendna EndNote upgrades are much less expensive. I can't recall original academic price. #phdchat

@ai1sa - @Comprof1 its just some pdfs not all. I select all copy change to word, reformat and annotate. annoying is all. #phdchat

@naomi_jacobs - @mrgunn That may help. Will try it. #phdchat

@ai1sa - also annoying ip#d not compatable with endnote, have to go up through dropbox or similar and back down... #phdchat

@Comprof1 - Does anyone ref their notes? Found my ereader was good for that but I bought it late in process. #phdchat

@opendna - @aeratcliffe The Endnote student upgrade is only $100 ('til you change computers). The first hit's always free. #notjudging #phdchat

@NSRiazat - Doing PhD part time means using time very efficiently otherwise I would spend all day playing on software and not progressing. :-) #phdchat

@lizith - @NSRiazat I suspect I've saved a lot of time using EN - don't think I could have coped without software - horses for courses :) #phdchat

@aeratcliffe - @opendna I receive offers each yr US$79 upgrade. You can also upgrade across platform, but only retain one licence, as I recall. #phdchat

@ai1sa - What i would like Endnote to improve on= coloured fonts for notes and word search within a particular reference (notes sections) #phdchat

@NSRiazat - 8.30pm brings us to the end of #phdchat for tonight. As always - many thanks to everyone for your valued contributions and thoughts.

@lizith - @NSRiazat and thank you as ever for gathering us #phdchat

@NSRiazat - Special thank you to @mrgunn for sharing knowledge and answering questions in tonight's session. :-) #phdchat

@naomi_jacobs - @NSRiazat Thanks once again for hosting - it's always useful! #phdchat

@lizith - right - I'm off to find my supper and watch #theapprentice #phdchat

@naomi_jacobs - @lizith Agreed - I'm dyslexic & refs were bane of my life before I found EndNote! & Mendeley's invaluable for organising @NSRiazat #phdchat

@naomi_jacobs - @NSRiazat Heh. I agree entirely but different outcome. I can only be effective enough with time with the help of software! #phdchat

@naomi_jacobs - @Comprof1 Do you mean making electronic notes on journal articles? Mendeley is great for that. Otherwise I just do notes in Word. #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @naomi_jacobs ~ can't afford any time for experimenting on software until July 2012 when break up for summer and have more time. #phdchat

@ai1sa - ta for a good conversation #phdchat ters Am near the end myself now, but love EN referencing system auto deleting any refs no longer in doc

@kiwicito - Sorry guys, forgot that you were in the middle of a #phdchat!!! My comment would have appeared a bit random!

@kiwicito - @NSRiazat when you finish will look to pass on the baton to someone else or carry on supporting us? #phdchat

@mrgunn - Thanks @aeratcliffe and @NSRiazat for inviting me to #phdchat. Nice talking with everyone. Questions welcomed at any time.

@martin_eve - @NSRiazat thanks for hosting! #phdchat

@gtombs - @nsriazat @Comprof1 @lizith sadly my response is closer to "they confuse me". Also my uni kept changing which one it subscribed to #phdchat

@kiwicito - @Comprof1 what do you mean by reference your notes? Like a filing system...? #phdchat

@chrissinerantzi - @smythkrs looking forward to submission. Can't wait to start the project... not sure how I will feel after one, two, three years... #phdchat

@AnnetteHenryRD - Wow! First 3 days of my #phd, talk about hit the ground running! But I can see that I'm gonna love this journey! #phdchat

@paul_kitchin - love it! @martin_eve: RT @SFD85 @martin_eve real men don't use referencing software. #phdchat

@aeratcliffe - @mrgunn Glad you could join in! Thanks. #phdchat

@kiwicito - I think there is an 'activity' turn in research underway. The humanists, along with other genres their days seen to be numbered. #phdchat

@Viil - @EmmaBurnettx do it! It's healthy to take breaks from PhD-ing some times :) #phdchat

@kiwicito - @NSRiazat thats a relief! #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @kiwicito - feedback suggests that live #phdchat would be sorely missed so will continue as long as there are PhD researchers who use it. :)

@NSRiazat - LOL :))) MT "@paul_kitchin: love it! @martin_eve: RT @SFD85 @martin_eve real men don't use referencing software. #phdchat"

@salma_patel - @martin_eve Couldn't agree more. Most conferences appear to be literally money making schemes. Just work out their profits. Huge! #phdchat

@DoctorJLB - Thanks v much for tonight's discussion. After a year wrestling with EN I've now downloaded Mendeley. Hope it's more user friendly! #phdchat

@Martyniszyn - 1/2 Today's highlight: @UCDLawSchool PhD Pizza Party. It was a great opportunity to catch up. Glad that so many people made it #phdchat

@Martyniszyn - 2/2 Many thanks to academic and admin staff who joined. PhD community at @UCDLawSchool flourishes. @ColizScott @efdel @odowdt #phdchat

@thesiswhisperer - Hey - is live UK #phdchat on? I missed that memo. Sorry - what's the topic this week? Referencing?

@salma_patel - @thesiswhisperer Done, sorry. It was on referencing using software #phdchat

@thesiswhisperer - @salma_patel oh poo :-( What was the consensus? Endnote, Mendeley, Zotero or some new fabulous thing I don't know about yet? #phdchat

@CatClarkson - I wish now looking back I'd set up one database of references for general, and one for actually used in my thesis on Mendeley #phdchat
