Reading and Writing Activities

'Keeping on top of your reading and writing activities'

#phdchat tweet log - 9th May 2012

@NSRiazat - Welcome to #phdchat - the topic for tonight is 'keeping on top of your reading and writing activities' #phd #research #academia

@srossmktg - A1: Stop going to #phdchat ;) #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @MisaimedBrain ~ like idea of spreadsheet to list reading. I did typed notes for each theme to keep ideas together from reading #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @qui_oui ~ still come across a good quote/theme I have read but can never locate it again unless have written it into my notes. #phdchat

@dreamyscientist - Im only starting #gradschool. How much reading is recommended? Also, how do u handle reading not related to projects? #phdchat

@lizith - @NSRiazat @qui_oui search facility in EndNote is good - will search inside pdfs for things I've forgotten where to find #phdchat

@CET47 - totally agree! RT @srossmktg: A1: Stop going to #phdchat ;) #phdchat

@almutei - @qui-oui Since I've started a private blog as digital research diary, I write short summaries of everything I read there. #phdchat

@NSRiazat - I find the reading workload less of a challenge than the writing up. #phdchat

@ianrobsons - I use endnote for my 'library' and evernote for notes of reading. #phdchat

@EmmaBurnettx - @dreamyscientist Important to read very widely in early satge. I used to write on index cards, the progressed to using NVivo #phdchat

@EmmaBurnettx - @ianrobsons Evernote is wonderful! I then transfer to NVivo to keep things altogether #phdchat

@srossmktg - @dreamyscientist All of it. READ ALL THE ARTICLES! #phdchat

@ClaretCarly - Hello all, looking forward to this topic as I'm trying to do just that while I travel to collect data! #phdchat

@ianrobsons - @EmmaBurnettx oh, that's something I think I'd like (esp as latest can help with visual data, right?) #phdchat

@EmmaBurnettx - Very valuable able to keep writing while reading. Two go hand-in-hand #phdchat

@MisaimedBrain - @NSRiazat On the other hand, the chapters I've written now serve as my notes on what I've read. :) #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @EmmaBurnettx @dreamyscientist I also write articles up. Kills two birds with one stone. #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @EmmaBurnettx @dreamyscientist ~ read widely in early stages but as you progress the focus of your reading will narrow down #phdchat

@dreamyscientist - @EmmaBurnettx when you say writing and reading, do you mean like a summary of the article being read? #phdchat

@EmmaBurnettx - @ianrobsons 100% and everything is in the one place. Easy to jump to written notes while exploring data & creating memos #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @MisaimedBrain ~ and all can be saved and used later for articles/papers once thesis is finished. #phdchat

@lizith - @NSRiazat @emmaburnettx @dreamyscientist but may have to read new stuff as new themes/ideas emerge #phdchat

@chasing_ling - @sheenagrad I am best in the morning. Can you work after you've had to work or teach? I find it so hard. Other folks? #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @EmmaBurnettx I tried to write at least 3 articles a year on different topics. I then submitted them #phdchat

@ianrobsons - @EmmaBurnettx need to get on to that training then! #phdchat

@NSRiazat - Am trying to be selective with reading now. Abstract, introduction and conclusions - main article if looks relevant to my themes. #phdchat

@EmmaBurnettx - @dreamyscientist Yes absolutely. I used to write a summary & notes of any of my thoughts or salient issues #phdchat

@CET47 - @EmmaBurnettx is NVivo difficult to use? what all are you using it for? #phdchat

@NSRiazat - Would people agree it is fair to say that the reading and writing should be taking place simultaneously? Not as separate entities. #phdchat

@ianrobsons - @NSRiazat I prioritise what sort of reading I need to do at a particular time (orientate / focus / critique / detail?) #phdchat

@EmmaBurnettx - @ianrobsons If you can get to QSR training I highly recommend. If not online tutorials etc are very good + the support team #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @dreamyscientist @EmmaBurnettx If you write an article about a topic of interest, it helps synthesize readings and ideas in them #phdchat

@MisaimedBrain - @NSRiazat Absolutely. I'm part-way through converting some chapters into a journal article. After all, most work already done. #phdchat

@ianrobsons - @EmmaBurnettx will check it out #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @chasing_ling @sheenagrad - I work best after teaching and not before. Can switch off and focus during the evening. #phdchat

@sheenagrad - @qui_oui I use Papers.app to sort papers into multiple project folders and go back to search by key word #phdchat

@lizith - @NSRiazat: Would people agree reading and writing should be taking place simultaneously? Not as separate entities. #phdchat >> definitely

@chasing_ling - @NSRiazat I prefer to think, create and write rather than read. I hate reading because I worry I spend time but forget what I read. #phdchat

@EmmaBurnettx - @CET47 I did a 2 day curse for basics which helped hugely. Use it for keeping notes, lit review, analysis - everything really #phdchat

@EliSwede - @qui_oui @NSRiazat Ref manager like Zotero is essential. Read, take notes, tags, keywords in there & collections for diff topics #phdchat

@vickytnz - #phdchat I use Mendeley for all my journal documents and highlighting, Evernote for more general notes.

@kirstyes - @qui_oui @NSRiazat Evening. I'm planning to use a private blog and @Scrivenerapp to keep track of my reading notes/reflections #phdchat

@dreamyscientist - @EmmaBurnettx u summarize every article u read? How do u choose which ones to summarize? How often do u look back at the summaries? #phdchat

@MisaimedBrain - @NSRiazat At first I read anything related to topic somehow. Later I'd read to address a specific issue in chapters. #phdchat

@dreamyscientist - @Comprof1 Do you get feedback on that type of writing? #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @MisaimedBrain that's the best thing with saving all the material as nothing is wasted. #phdchat

@srossmktg - READ ALL THE THINGS! #phdchat http://t.co/Cylzh9LJ

@almutei - @NSRiazat #phdchat Not necessarily. You might have to read and understand first, then do stuff with it, then write down what you found out.

@ianrobsons - @lizith I need to read and write - both support the other (focus, criticality, application etc) #phdchat

@NSRiazat - I use Zetoc alerts to let me know when new copies of journals in my area are published to help keep on top of the reading. #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @dreamyscientist Yes. And it helps you to formulate ideas that you will use as the Phd goes on. #phdchat

@martin_eve - I always try to write my reading into the thesis, even if it goes in the long run. This way I know I've understood it & "used" it #phdchat

@EmmaBurnettx - @dreamyscientist early days I pretty much summarised everything I read. I still look over them now & will likely continue #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @almutei ~ good point - I went back and selected which sections of writing from initial reading was relevant and filed the rest. #phdchat

@AddictedtoTweed - @NSRiazat aren't you afraid a question relating to the content in the body of the text you cited may come up in a viva? #phdchat

@ClaretCarly - @NSRiazat Me too, it's so useful! I like that you can set up alerts for specific authors, too #phdchat

@lizith - @martin_eve yes - even if not directly into thesis, I will often write a few paragraphs which may or may not find way into thesis #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @AddictedtoTweed ~ fully read all relevant papers but skim read rest -prioritising helped me to get through my reading workload. #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @ClaretCarly ~ Zetoc is a very efficient way of keeping track of when journals are published otherwise I would miss most of mine. #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @AddictedtoTweed ~ but that is good point to remember for viva though as examiner may ask about paper/article I have skimmed over. #phdchat

@Karenmca - @NSRiazat #phdchat Zetoc alerts brilliant! I use too. @ library school years ago, we were taught re "current awareness". Faff b4 internet!

@srossmktg - @NSRiazat Zetoc is a British thing? #phdchat

@EmmaBurnettx - Even stuff you may not see as relevant could be important during reading. Enables rationalisation of why you didn't do something #phdchat

@almutei - @ClaretCarly @NSRiazat #phdchat I used Google Scholar alerts so far. Will try out Zetoc as well.

@NSRiazat - @Karenmca ~ can't imagine how people did PhD'd before internet - must have been on campus and not distance? #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @srossmktg ~ Mimas Zatoc alerts is on a database I think? @Karenmca #phdchat

@almutei - @NSRiazat @Karenmca #phdchat Before internet people were probably expected to read less. Even being on campus I mostly use online papers.

@NSRiazat - http://t.co/lgaQ1j3N ~ think Mimas Zetoc alerts may be UK? #phdchat

@shubush - @srossmktg @nsriazat yes it is british can find it here http://t.co/SlLrqjSl #phdchat

@aeratcliffe - Well said! RT @sheenagrad: ...Getting up extra early(before my mind has a chance to protest) sit at my desk and write! #phdchat

@srossmktg - @NSRiazat Only UK access. #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @almutei @karenmca ~ I work from home, mostly online, and visit university library once in every few months. #phdchat

@dreamyscientist - @srossmktg @NsRiazat Google Scholar is the alternative I guess. #phdchat

@chasing_ling - @martin_eve i make notes on what I read in form of blog posts. This is helping me 'use' reading. Anyone else blog to read? #phdchat

@martin_eve - @chasing_ling the main man for blogging everything is @mark_carrigan -- continuous publishing! #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @almutei @ClaretCarly ~ not come across Google Scholar alerts although use Google Scholar a lot. Will look into that. #phdchat

@srossmktg - Seems to me, there should be less time tabbing/organizing things to read and more time actually reading them. #phdchat

@EmmaBurnettx - MT @chasing_ling: @martin_eve i make notes on what I read in form of blog posts. This is helping me use reading < Good idea! #phdchat

@almutei - In that case, for everyone else: Try Google Scholar alerts. MT @srossmktg: @NSRiazat Only UK access (to Zetoc). #phdchat

@shubush - @chasing_ling @martin_eve no but i think I will start! #phdchat

@kirstyes - @NSRiazat @dreamyscientist @claretcarly @thesiswhisperer Sorry of anybody already said but can set up Google Scholar alerts too #phdchat

@EmmaBurnettx - @srossmktg NVivo helps this challenge hugely! Once set up, it takes no time to enter etc #phdchat

@ClaretCarly - @dreamyscientist I hate reading on the computer. I'm trying to get into the habit of sending papers to my e-reader #phdchat

@srossmktg - @dreamyscientist I bought a tablet, though still tough to get used to. I don't blame you. #phdchat

@ThomsonPat - @NSRiazat #phdchat pre www we used photocopies of articles. I had two filing cabinets full. I did distance phd.

@martin_eve - @NSRiazat I go to a public space (library) to work. Acts like panopticon; I know I'm being watched, so I must work! #phdchat

@srossmktg - @EmmaBurnettx We're not all working with qual software ;) #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @dreamyscientist ~ i prefer paper to laptop - and highlighters too. Can't read lengthy papers/articles online effectively. #phdchat

@lizith - @dreamyscientist I print more than I really want to, but do find it useful to move from screen to paper and back again #phdchat

@almutei - Same here. Only print things I'll read within the next few days. RT @dreamyscientist: I still prefer to sit with printouts ... #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @martin_eve ~ know exactly what you mean and why that would be a successful strategy. I work best in a coffee shop/uni library #phdchat

@chasing_ling - #phdchat how do you force yourself to sit down and read? I am in 1st year of phd and must explore the literature. Help!

@ianrobsons - I try to print only 'key' articles for me at that time. also break the rule of writing on my books, which I know many people hate! #phdchat

@EmmaBurnettx - @srossmktg I know! I'm talking about organising your writing from reading not qual data analysis. Has lots of other functions too #phdchat

@lizith - @chasing_ling treat it like a job - reading is one of tasks that has to be done! #phdchat

@almutei - @martin_eve @NSRiazat #phdchat I'm lucky to have a (shared) office. Same effect of feeling watched.

@srossmktg - @chasing_ling How would you NOT read? It's the lifeblood. #phdchat

@ianrobsons - @chasing_ling get motivated with questions you are asking, what you want to achieve thru reading? #phdchat

@CET47 - @chasing_ling I try to find a quiet place, take your laptop,tablet, printed journals and read about 5 at a time. take a break then. #phdchat

@dreamyscientist - Beat reading procrastination RT @lizith: treat it like a job - reading is one of tasks that has to be done! #phdchat #phdchat

@ianrobsons - I find that once I 'get to know' ideas and authors a little it's easier to return. #phdchat

@EmmaBurnettx - @chasing_ling It's one of the most important things you do in yr 1 :) #phdchat

@srossmktg - @EmmaBurnettx I organize through logical structuring. Put in the supporting papers where necessary. #phdchat

@almutei - @srossmktg You're talking about fun reading there, @chasing_ling about work reading. ;-) #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @lizith @chasing_ling - read small amounts and then write up. I let my reading pile up and then have a big writing task. #phdchat

@almutei - @CET47 @chasing_ling Or read one or two every morning. #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @chasing_ling I decided that I would write an article so I was reading for a purpose. #phdchat Theoretical articles.

@raulpacheco - My colleagues at @UBCJournalism just posted for a job: Instructor Position (Tenure Track) http://t.co/NLfQGxwf #PhDChat please share widely

@ianrobsons - I always make sure I'm carrying something around I can read if delayed or find time! #phdchat

@srossmktg - @almutei Fun reading? What's that? When you enjoy what you do, the two words should be synonymous ;P #phdchat

@ClaretCarly - Takes time, but same here RT @ianrobsons: I find that once I 'get to know' ideas and authors a little it's easier to return. #phdchat

@almutei - 2nd time makes much more sense! RT @ianrobsons: I find that once I 'get to know' ideas and authors a little it's easier to return. #phdchat

@ianrobsons - @srossmktg some reading more 'dense' perhaps. Some topics I love but it's hard going! #phdchat

@shubush - how much reading do people do each week? #phdchat

@chasing_ling - @Comprof1 this is what me and super are doing. She sets me 'short reports', I read in order to write. Helps to form chapters too. #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @ianrobsons I also would move to the bibliography/references and id new readings through there to get a body of work #phdchat found crossref

@ianrobsons - @Comprof1 good strategy #phdchat

@almutei - @srossmktg Well ... there's other parts of my phd that I enjoy more. #phdchat

@chasing_ling - @almutei fun reading I can do whenever! But fun reading is no longer fiction - it's texts I wish to read but forbidden by super #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @shubush by the end of thesis/dissertation (I successfully defended today) not much reading, but a lot of writing #phdchat

@almutei - @Comprof1 @ianrobsons That's why the reading pile keeps growing as you read. :-/ #phdchat

@coocho - @chasing_ling pomodoro technique works wonders for any work, incl reading #phdchat

@EmmaBurnettx - @shubush Guess depends which part working on, but I try to read a couple papers every evening just now #phdchat

@lizith - @Comprof1 congratulations! #phdchat

@chasing_ling - @srossmktg indeed. But reading stuff that is 'wrong' or badly written or misguided can be tedious. Fun to pull apart sometimes, tho #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @shubush ~ I try and read a minimum of one paper/journal article etc every day otherwise would never get through it all. #phdchat

@EmmaBurnettx - @Comprof1 Fanastic! ;) did you enjoy the experience? #phdchat

@coocho - @shubush I think an article per day is a good pace, if you have other work to do as well #phdchat

@dreamyscientist - @Comprof1 Congratulations!! What are you doing here, go party or something! :) #phdchat

@shubush - @Comprof1 congratulations! #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @lizith Thanks. Still need to do revisions and defense was a bit tough at times, but overall not as bad as I thought #phdchat

@almutei - Seconded. RT @dreamyscientist: @Comprof1 Congratulations!! What are you doing here, go party or something! :) #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @shubush ~ also keep bibliography updated as this becomes a big job later on. Each time read something I reference it straight away #phdchat

@dreamyscientist - Good idea @NSRiazat I am going to use this as a thumb rule from here on #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @NSRiazat @shubush I also always had an article on me (especially in beginning) to doctor's office, kid's sports events, etc #phdchat

@ThomsonPat - #phdchat join or start a reading group. Some most useful texts 4 me were ones other group members wanted but I wouldn't have chosen.

@NSRiazat - @thesiswhisperer ~ I thought it captured the feelings really well. Everyone who does a PhD can resonate with that article for sure. #phdchat

@srossmktg - @chasing_ling Yes but you'll never know what's "good" v. "bad" unless you read a lot. #phdchat

@Lemness - I make time to read. Make time to think. Then the writing comes much easier. #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @almutei @dreamyscientist Ha I did just go out to eat with my son. But still have revisions and until I have phd in hand, no party. #phdchat

@EmmaBurnettx - @shubush @srossmktg Was invaluable for my literature reviews #phdchat

@NSRiazat - Comprof1 - excellent - brilliant news. :-) #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @dreamyscientist See my comment to the RT. Sorry you didn't get id'd! #phdchat

@almutei - @NSRiazat @shubush Save the bibliography data (in bibtex file) as soon as I download something. save pdfs with the key as filename. #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @shubush @comprof1 ~ read one article minimum - each article tends to generate MORE reading so have to keep momentum going. :-) #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @almutei @NSRiazat @shubush Absolutely. Also, once a year do house cleaning and find those you saved! #phdchat

@SueFolley - @Comprof1 many congratulations!!! Fab news :) #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @Lemness ~ think that is a key point about making time to think in between reading and writing. #phdchat

@lawrenceandrews - @chasing_ling I download papers on my Kindle for long boring train journeys #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @SueFolley Thanks. #phdchat kept me focused these last 3 months!

@NSRiazat - @lawrenceandrews ~ I always have an article/journal with me as sometimes 10 mins is all that is needed to skim through. #phdchat

@almutei - @Comprof1 @NSRiazat @shubush They're keyworded 'reading list'. Currently at 68. ... 2 per day from now on. #phdchat

@coocho - @lawrenceandrews articles on kindle work for reading on a sunny day in a park, too. Otherwise i'd never get thru half my reading #phdchat

@shubush - Great advice from all - thank you I will have to look at organising the bibliography #phdchat

@chasing_ling - @ThomsonPat great idea. Could you see this working online? My dept has v small research comm - what about online reading groups? #phdchat

@EmmaBurnettx - MT @NSRiazat @lawrenceandrews I always have an article/journal as sometimes 10 mins is all that is needed to skim through < same #phdchat

@almutei - @lawrenceandrews @chasing_ling I've given up on that. Common two-column layout drives me mad. And I can't scribble on the margin. #phdchat

@chasing_ling - @lawrenceandrews should I get a kindle? You can put pdfs on, right? Think I would read more papers. #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @shubush I also found teaching a new course helped. I never use a text and need to do a lot of reading to prepare. #phdchat

@chasing_ling - @VerbingNouns what was first year like for you with reading? Anyway, I think I just need to kick myself in the ass! #phdchat

@almutei - @chasing_ling @lawrenceandrews If you want to read pdfs on kindle, get the big one! #phdchat

@Lemness - @NSRiazat i learned that late in my writing. I had to figure out how to set aside time to think. #phdchat.

@Comprof1 - @chasing_ling @lawrenceandrews I got an ereader and it really helped. But I also like paper ones, easier on the eyes. #phdchat

@chasing_ling - #phdchat is brilliant! This will help me to get through this, get the most out of it, and make friends :)

@NSRiazat - @Lemness ~ wish I had factored in more thinking time and less reading. #phdchat

@dreamyscientist - For those who e-read, do you summarize on a paper/notes or a computer? I hv found myself cut-copying often instead of summarizing #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @chasing_ling @VerbingNouns Read for a purpose. Either create a course or write an article gave me deadlines and reasons to read #phdchat

@chasing_ling - @almutei @lawrenceandrews hmmm maybe a tablet, then? Or maybe I can just use pen and paper :) #phdchat

@EmmaBurnettx - @chasing_ling It absolutely will! An amazing community with lots of help, support from people going through same things :) #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @chasing_ling @VerbingNouns Another purpose: write a blog in which you have to write at least one post a week in your field. #phdchat

@coocho - @chasing_ling @ThomsonPat online reading group sounds like a good idea! Members need to be from approx. the same area, though... #phdchat

@dreamyscientist - not saying I plagiarize, if I like a said statement so much I am tempted to use it as such in my personal summary #phdchat

@SueFolley - @Comprof1 must be a fantastic feeling :) #phdchat

@ClaretCarly - @dreamyscientist I make notes by hand to avoid copying & pasting. Also helps me to remember what I've read #phdchat

@ClaretCarly - @dreamyscientist I make notes by hand to avoid copying & pasting. Also helps me to remember what I've read #phdchat

@ianrobsons - I've arranged to read a book I find particularly challenging with someone and we meet regularly to compare notes and discuss #phdchat

@Lemness - @NSRiazat i think we try to write-think-edit all at once. Setting aside time to do all individually makes for better writing. #phdchat.

@coocho - @dreamyscientist I always have a college block next to kindle/computer and take notes; copypasting is just not the same... #phdchat

@NSRiazat - Having got through tonight's uni reading I am looking forward to reading a few chapters of my Mark Billingham novel. :-) #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @dreamyscientist I'd synthesize on my blog. I'd keep notes on my ereader (it has a stylus which is why I got it). #phdchat

@srossmktg - @coocho @chasing_ling @ThomsonPat We tried doing a group from here to Google+ Hangouts. 3 continents. Fizzled out though. #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @SueFolley Hasn't hit yet. Not until the final revisions and signitures are on the paperwork for graduation (in August)! #phdchat

@almutei - @chasing_ling @lawrenceandrews I mostly mean the screen size. Normal kindle is about <A6. Scribbles would work on extra paper. #phdchat

@dreamyscientist - @Comprof1 That will be hard for me as my reading is so varied and spread out; I am working on a proposal #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @Lemness @NSRiazat I agree Don't see how you can read without writing. Finding the time to think is hard, esp. with job and family #phdchat

@dreamyscientist - @coocho I must be dumb, whats a college block? #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @dreamyscientist Can you diagram it? I.e. mindmap of ideas and references? I'd then look for references in those references. #phdchat

@chasing_ling - @Comprof1 @VerbingNouns I absolutely do need purpose. Hence short report writing. I need to remind myself the phd is purpose too #phdchat

@almutei - @chasing_ling @lawrenceandrews If your reading contains no e.g. maths, you can safely convert to ereader format. #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @chasing_ling @VerbingNouns There are journals that accept overviews of research in progress. Possible to write up for them? #phdchat

@NSRiazat - 8.30pm brings us to end of #phdchat for tonight. An informative and invaluable session as always - thanks to all for contributions. #phdchat

@NSRiazat - @Comprof1 ~ references are gold and led me to lots more relevant references and 'deeper' reading around my concepts. #phdchat

@Comprof1 - #phdchat Who do you bounce ideas off of while reading? Do you get feedback from writing? Necessary also in read/write process

@CET47 - @NSRiazat thanks for moderating #phdchat brilliant as always. #phdchat

@EmmaBurnettx - Thank you everyone for a great discussion as always! Thank you also to @NSRiazat for organising :) #phdchat

@ThomsonPat - @chasing_ling maybe. I know of 1 group that worked with 2supervisors and their grad students, USA, Oz. Eventually online and f2f. #phdchat

@ai1sa - Every article i read iI also made notes on straight away in EN library and attached the article #phdchat

@smythkrs - Great news Chrissi! "@chrissinerantzi Capturing the very beginning #phdchat paperwork will be posted tomorrow http://t.co/yhR9OAcE"

@ai1sa - #other reading strategy early on was 'stay close to the fire"= the main authors in my methodology till i understood it #phdchat

@Comprof1 - @ThomsonPat @chasing_ling You need to find a venue and moderator (s). I find blogs also work. #phdchat

@dreamyscientist - @NSRiazat Thank you for moderating! This was my 1st #phdchat, very helpful and very informative #phdchat

@ai1sa - sometimes for particularly illuminating reading i would blog it. Take care what you say, authors may visit :) #phdchat

@ai1sa - Sorry 'bout being late to #phdchat, seems like a good one, will catch up later

@Comprof1 - @ai1sa Interesting. Mine was to cast a wide net and go out of my field (education) to others (comm, mgmt, esl, psych, sociology). #phdchat

@almutei - @dreamyscientist @NSRiazat There's a website with archives of former #phdchat's if you want to browse around a bit http://t.co/bpFuuwc4

@NSRiazat - Please choose a topic for #phdchat on Wednesday 16th May 2012 (7.30pm-8.30pm BST) #research #phd #academia http://t.co/P5pDt7rk

@ai1sa - @Comprof1 I did that on the content of what i studied, but understanding methodology - too many poor users of it #phdchat

@ai1sa - @chasing_ling i would take myself to a cafe. Set a time limit eg two hours & just read electronic form & put it into EN with notes #phdchat

@thesiswhisperer - Just signed up for https://t.co/wpnv8Fvj on @mnot's suggestion. Looks like weight watchers for knowledge workers #phdchat

@ai1sa - @chasing_ling @ThomsonPat my online reading group=me, my sup, & 2 othr studnts, would do a skype reading chat monthly (methodology) #phdchat

@ai1sa - @ianrobsons when i own the book i have no compunction about highlighting and writing on it :) #phdchat

@chasing_ling - @ai1sa I do work awfully well in cafes. A shame it costs a fortune in coffee! #phdchat

@ianrobsons - @ai1sa phew, guilt gone (I say I'm interacting with and owning it!) #phdchat

@SueFolley - @Comprof1 Hope your revisions go ok - have you many to do? #phdchat

@ianrobsons - Good to chat, see you all later ;) #phdchat

@strictlykaren - @Comprof1 congratulations on your success, hope to read about the experience on your blog soon ? #phdchat

@strictlykaren - missed #phdchat tonight, looks like it was a good discussion

@ResearchEx - Special Interest Group by Faisal Azhar: Hey, In my previous blog I mentioned the importance... http://t.co/YkslWFrv #warwickphd #phdchat
