'Managing your reading/writing workload: obtaining a reasonable balance'
#phdchat tweet log - 27th June 2012
@NSRiazat - Welcome to #phdchat - the topic tonight is 'managing your reading/writing workload: obtaining a reasonable balance' #phD #academia #research
@betaburns - Starting now: @NSRiazat: #phdchat topic tonight: 'managing your reading/writing workload: obtaining a reasonable balance' #phD #academia"
@sara_rose1 - Just found Springer Journal Author Academy. Looks really useful! http://t.co/vVVyQ03o #phdchat #gradschool
@londonaesthetik - @NSRiazat #phdchat hi Nasima and everyone! I join you from couch!
@jennifermjones - What they don't tell you about public speaking - such as be f*&king excited about it. <- absolutely this http://t.co/CHHHtqdT #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @lemuelusita - no time for a break really tonight. Working on draft of methodology chapter and adding depth to it. #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @londonaesthetik - hello - just putting methodology stuff away and then getting into tonight's #phdchat :)
@NSRiazat - How do people map out their reading/writing time? How do you choose which takes priority at any given time? #phdchat
@JRNorwood - I always set aside some time each morn to catch up on RSS feeds but getting time to read my growing book list is difficult. #phdchat
@NSRiazat - I have waves and ebbs of writing and reading time. Never achieved a decent balance of either - must plan harder. #phdchat
@londonaesthetik - @NSRiazat #phdchat three years later I'm still trying to figure out how to do it. I think devoting a specific day would be a good idea!
@LBA_OX12 - I try to set regular time to look at Scholar alerts & follow any possible new articles #phdchat
@mitchellfriedmn - @NSRiazat I write best in the early morning, when my thinking is sharpest AND before I go to work :) #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @JRNorwood - mine is growing pile of journal articles. Need to find more recent material - back to researching/reading this weekend #phdchat
@londonaesthetik - @NSRiazat #phdchat I plan my writing time since I now know my optimal writing time (late aft/evening)
@dratarrant - @londonaesthetik @nsriazat I'm also revisiting this, I rarely just read without writing, I write notes as I read #phdchat
@ICTwitz - I suppose it's all down to what I need to do. Sometimes I need to read, other times I need to write. #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @mitchellfriedmn ~ have to say 6am starts are good. I tend to read couple of journal articles or few paragraphs of my own writing. #phdchat
@JRNorwood - I often get up early to do the same MT @NSRiazat I write best in the early morn when my thinking is sharpest & before I go to work #phdchat
@DrSustainable - @JRNorwood same here. Reading full books tricky. Maybe books less Relevant in todays fast moving research arena #phdchat
@ICTwitz - I LOVE reading on my #Kindle but sometimes you just cannot beat good old paper and books, so you can highlight easy. #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @LBA_OX12 ~ I have set up Zetoc alerts and 'bookmark' articles to go back to and print those that are immediately relevant. #phdchat
@betaburns - #phdchat Do you write as you read? Summarising, marking down thoughts, signposting for later review, even taking breaks to write properly?
@londonaesthetik - @dratarrant @nsriazat #phdchat same here, easy to put notes into my thesis. I also insert reference field codes (endnote) into notes
@lizith - @JRNorwood @nsriazat my mornings are when I'm most productive whatever I'm doing - what takes priority depends on big picture #phdchat
@DrSustainable - I like to read and mark up journal articles on my iPad, send to computer and extract the notes #phdchat
@ICTwitz - @betaburns Yes, but a lot easier to do when faced with paper. Not as easy to do if reading on Kindle or iPad :-( #phdchat
@JRNorwood - Diigo and/or Pocket are great for bookmarking. I also use If this then that to help me. @LBA_OX12 #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @dratarrant @londonaesthetik ~ writing whilst reading - I'm starting to do more of that now. I tended to make notes than 'write'. #phdchat
@lizith - @betaburns I do a lot of skim reading to decide whether worth reading in more depth #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @londonaesthetik ~ looking forward to my 6 week writing up time over summer break to catch up a bit. #phdchat
@ICTwitz - @DrSustainable Which app works best for you? I'm a fan of #GoodReader but it recently lost ALL my files within thanks to update :-( #phdchat
@JRNorwood - I have increasingly found that I tend towards digital material b/c I can interact with it more-write while I read, bookmark, etc #phdchat
@dratarrant - @NSRiazat @londonaesthetik I find it ensures I interpret the ideas properly when writing for journals #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @DrSustainable @JRNorwood ~ interesting question about books vs journals. #phdchat
@lizith - I think there is also reading with a purpose and reading to sense the domain - need different approaches & levels of concentration #phdchat
@Donna_Peach - @erikacule Really great and informative blog - Love it #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @ICTwitz #GoodReader #phdchat I've never used #Goodreader. I tend towards Pocket and/or Evernote
@ICTwitz - @JRNorwood What device works best for you? #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @betaburns ~ write and read well - never leave enough time to think concepts through though and make links between them. #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @ICTwitz #phdchat I use my tablet and my Macbook constantly. iPad to read/annotate, Macbook to write
@NSRiazat - @lizith @betaburns ~ took me a long time to practise the art of skim reading. #phdchat
@ICTwitz - @JRNorwood Good Reader is good, in allowing you to highlight, underline etc. You get pdf from dropbox. #phdchat
@DrSustainable - @ICTwitz goodreader for me too, but synced with Dropbox so not worried bout loosing anything #phdchat
@nickygen - @NSRiazat I can't read anything in depth in the evenings so save that for my sat mornings #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @NSRiazat @lizith @betaburns #phdchat skimming worked wonders during my PhD studies enabling me to find relevant material quickly
@sakinasofia - @NSRiazat there's some many thing to read that you find interesting to put in thesis..when to stop? #phdchat
@ICTwitz - @JRNorwood I like Pocket, but not PDF friendly for journals? Or have I missed a trick? #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @dratarrant ~ good idea re: interpreting ideas. I need to have some time out to process concepts and the links between them. #phdchat
@Queen_Claire - My iPad is always on in my handbag. Put all my papers on there and read and write in spare moments. It all adds up #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @ICTwitz #phdchat agreed that pocket not good with PDF, but great with webpages.
@ICTwitz - @DrSustainable Sorry, I meant it lost annotated PDF's, which was annoying. #phdchat
@nickygen - @JRNorwood what apps do you us on iPad to annotate #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @Queen_Claire #phdchat do any of us go anywhere w/o our iPads/tablets? My wife hates that i'm always on it!
@londonaesthetik - @NSRiazat @lizith @betaburns #phdchat started using simple template to fill out (main points, conclusions, method). Makes skimming easy
@ICTwitz - For PHD Reading, how do you know WHAT to read, with SO many journals available? Any good journal search facilities beyond Google? #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @nickygen #phdchat I usually stick with trusty #Evernote - the $5 a month I pay is well worth it
@NSRiazat - @nickygen ~ Saturday morning is my study time too - less distractions and can fully focus on my research. :-). #phdchat
@DrSustainable - @ICTwitz Ahh. I save annotations in original file and sync back to Dropbox at end of Session #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @londonaesthetik #phdchat the template is a great idea...maybe you can get me a copy?
@NSRiazat - @sakinasofia ~ I went off ona reading/writing tangent and had to come back to my main RQ's. Easy to drift off. #phdchat
@ICTwitz - @Queen_Claire I love my iPad, but not too good for reading when you're outside. That's where kindle comes in. #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @Queen_Claire ~ I always carry a paper copy of an article/journal with me - agree - it all adds up. #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @ICTwitz #phdchat a bit of levity - do PhD's go outside? Just joking but you're right about the glare
@ICTwitz - @DrSustainable You're just too clever. Do you have to do that manually, or does it do it automatically? #phdchat
@lizith - @ICTwitz have you explored the databases in your uni library - if not, try asking one of the librarians for guidance #phdchat
@londonaesthetik - @JRNorwood #phdchat go it from a blog... Will try and find. Someone posted on twitter...
@JRNorwood - @ICTwitz @DrSustainable #phdchat if you go to http://t.co/ud5mPXEi, you can automate processes between apps - saves me so much time
@sakinasofia - @NSRiazat yup...very easy to drift! Need to focus #phdchat
@ICTwitz - @JRNorwood Fair point :-D #phdchat
@DrSustainable - @ICTwitz lol. Sync manually so have to remember. You can do it automatically if you use iCloud though, not done so as pc @ work #phdchat
@ICTwitz - @lizith I am remote - don't get into uni library too much. #phdchat
@dratarrant - For some reason I fell guilty if I read and don't write, writing feels like more a measurable output #phdchat
@DrSustainable - @JRNorwood hmmm. Never thought of that, might be worth a try #phdchat
@ICTwitz - @DrSustainable Thanks. I'll have to explore that. Couldn't work out the icloud bit! #phdchat
@cdp_xe - Working on four papers, a tech report, and on my dissertation. #phdchat
@ICTwitz - @JRNorwood Good thinking. I have an ifttt account, but don't utilise it as much as I should. #phdchat
@lizith - @ICTwitz you may find some tutorials on your site on how to use them - the databases are great for complex keyword searches #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @dratarrant ~ spending more time these next few weeks writing more than reading. #phdchat
@debbiefuco - @gtombs I feel you pain! #phdchat
@JRNorwood - wrong link earlier... http://t.co/DWjXtlYs #phdchat
@lizith - @dratarrant know what you mean - reading can feel a luxury - I'm intermitting at present & have cleared the reading pile #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @ICTwitz #phdchat did much of my dissertation remotely...online databases worked out well for me. Local uni's sometimes welcome visits
@betaburns - #phdchat how do you maintain discipline & avoid tangential reading? Sooo many rabbit holes to fall down!
@ICTwitz - Ok, thinking about writing. Firstly, I love my iPad Bluetooth keyboard, and that is my favourite writing tool at the moment. #phdchat
@aephd - @ICTwitz Start w/ G.Scholar to get idea of the "latest" on topic, then use cited by function for understanding the 'conversation' #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @betaburns #phdchat I prioritize topics and devote time accordingly...most of the time
@ICTwitz - @JRNorwood That's a fair point. I should explore. #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @aephd @ICTwitz #phdchat great advice!
@dratarrant - @lizith think I need some kind of reward system for reading to keep a balance #phdchat
@lizith - @dratarrant also means I am giving myself reflecting time - realised how essential that is rather than looking at productivity #phdchat
@DrSustainable - @ICTwitz My tool of choice is my 13 inch MacBook air #phdchat
@aephd - @betaburns That's the hard part #phdchat
@lizith - @betaburns tangential reading can be good if building big picture and contextualising work #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @dratarrant #phdchat my reward system was my PhD...now its more intrinsic of just getting something accomplished
@JRNorwood - @lizith @betaburns #phdchat tangential reading also important if you don't know what exactly you are looking for but have a big idea
@srossmktg - Finally on campus! Finally at a #phdchat! Finally making coffee! #phdchat
@ICTwitz - @DrSustainable I am seriously considering getting one, as a reward for all my hard work :-) #phdchat
@nickygen - Using refworks has helped me to organise my reading. Was falling into trap of re reading articles I had forgotten I jad read. #phdchat
@lizith - @dratarrant difficult to write without reading - would writing be a reward? #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @lizith #phdchat to get this far in education, intrinsic motivation is critical so for me writing is a reward...having a finished product
@allonsdanser - @nickygen Same here, I've discovered that typing up notes into a bib manager helps me remember what I've read. :) #phdchat
@DrSustainable - @ICTwitz def worth it. Bought mine with a research grant ;) #Phdchat
@CET47 - I don't mind reading but takes me a while to get into writing mode! Any tips? #phdchat
@dratarrant - @lizith I was just thinking about blogging being useful for summarising reading and thinking #phdchat can then go into other projects
@ICTwitz - @DrSustainable Sounds like a good reason to me! #phdchat
@allonsdanser - @srossmktg You are having a successful day! #phdchat #phdchat
@betaburns - #phdchat even once prelim reading done & focus has been found, I am regularly tempted by juicy tangents. Need a strict reading regime!
@JRNorwood - @dratarrant @lizith #phdchat blogging is one method I use to store my ideas for later flushing out
@JRNorwood - fleshing not flushing #phdchat
@aephd - @jrnorwood Thanks! If your school has VPN software, I'd highly suggest downloading it.It'll make G.Scholar easier to deal with..#phdchat
@allonsdanser - @JRNorwood Or flushing! depends on the writing, hunh? :) #phdchat
@ICTwitz - @JRNorwood Is your blog private, or do you open for scrutiny? #phdchat
@Donna_Peach - @CET47 A workshop today recommended 7 min free writing bursts and changing location to reduce anxiety such as writing in a cafe #phdchat
@DrSustainable - Oops gotta go tweeps, kids getting out of bed.thanks all #phdchat
@betaburns - @JRNorwood As many of my ideas need flushing as need fleshing! #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @ICTwitz #phdchat my blog is public and I tweet a lot which helps me
@ICTwitz - @JRNorwood I do this, but it is a private one within http://t.co/WTGpvn7k Great, and syncs between tablets and PC #phdchat
@CET47 - @Donna_Peach sounds good I might try that #phdchat
@debbiefuco - @Beambug Bummer! I know it sounds lame, but it wasn't meant to be. Someday, you'll see why. All your hard work will pay off! #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @aephd #phdchat sorry I missed something...download what?
@strictlykaren - Sorry I'm very late #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @strictlykaren #phdchat welcome!
@srossmktg - What was the topic? #phdchat
@ai1sa - @dratarrant i also found blogging useful for finding my own voice having practiced in the blog as if i had the voice of others #phdchat
@ScholarAtLarge - #Book, and other #reviews by Raphael Susewind http://t.co/wGi8YVv7 #phdchat #phd #bookreviews #academicbookreviews
@debbiefuco - @Acrobat13 Congratulations! Love them all, but number three is badly needed! #phdchat
@strictlykaren - @JRNorwood Thanks, what's the topic, blogging? #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @strictlykaren #phdchat balancing the reading/writing workload
@ICTwitz - @strictlykaren Organising your reading and writing #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @debbiefuco @Acrobat13 #phdchat what is viva? Seen this a lot recently
@dratarrant - @JRNorwood @lizith haha flushing and fleshing both relevant I think!! #phdchat knowing what doesn't work can be as good as what does
@ai1sa - @lizith well done on clearing your reading pile! My desktop and tabletop r still cluttered. But my head is full...as is the thesis #phdchat
@Donna_Peach - Today I learned that I am guilty of binge writing #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @dratarrant #phdchat so true, so not really a Freudian slip after all haha
@Donna_Peach - @Donna_Peach @CET47 oops should have added #phdchat
@dratarrant - @ai1sa that's interesting! I do think they help trying out different ideas and practicing communicating them #phdchat
@strictlykaren - I have an awful lot of PDF articles in my to read file #phdchat
@yimeizhu - @allonsdanser what kind of bib manager do u use to write notes? #phdchat
@debbiefuco - @santinoregilme Hmm. I use Windows for Mac. #phdchat
@debbiefuco - @lizith Congrats! #phdchat
@lizith - @ai1sa I decided to go through the pile, read what needed reading because relevant & ditched rest - ruthless #phdchat
@debbiefuco - I hope it's contagious! RT @sarahvannier: Nothing like a stats epiphany for a little mid-week motivation! #phdchat
@AmandaMichelle - story of my life. RT @strictlykaren: I have an awful lot of PDF articles in my to read file #phdchat
@lizith - @ai1sa currently I read new stuff as I get it #phdchat
@debbiefuco - @lizith Re business cards at conferences: I pick them up if there isn't a QR code available. #phdchat
@betaburns - #phdchat google desktop is good for being able to search content of docs & PDFs. I'm working on a good detailed cataloging system.
@srossmktg - Confused as to what the actual topic is...? #phdchat
@aephd - @jrnorwood Downloading VPN software. It's app that makes browser think you're on campus, while remote. #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @lizith ~ well done on getting the paper written for conference. Know you will shine when presenting. #phdchat
@debbiefuco - @JRNorwood My understanding is that it is the oral defense. #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @aephd #phdchat ah, ok
@lizith - @debbiefuco interesting - maybe I need to get into QR codes, but that would mean a new phone - hmmm #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @srossmktg ~ topic for #phdchat is 'writing and reading workload:obtaining a reasonable balance'.
@Donna_Peach - @betaburns I use Mendeley synced with dropbox :) #phdchat
@Judiebbrell - #phdchat very late - like the topic my problem is too much reading not enough writing
@allonsdanser - @yimeizhu I recently bought Sente and love it. It synchs to ipad & macbook. #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @debbiefuco #phdchat just thinking about my own oral defense makes me shudder, was so happy when that was over a few years back
@lizith - @srossmktg managing reading/writing balance #phdchat
@allonsdanser - @yimeizhu I use zotero also for preliminary notes & for work. #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @Judiebbrell ~ have the same isue - too much reading and not enough writing. Need to balance that out over next few weeks. #phdchat
@srossmktg - Hm... is there really a way to manage it? Doesn't a lot of it rely on self-control? #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @allonsdanser @yimeizhu #phdchat so many apps to choose from, I pretty much just chose one that worked for me and keep it
@NSRiazat - @allonsdanser @yimeizhu ~ what is Sente? That's a new one. #phdchat
@dratarrant - @srossmktg I think so and I think you have to manage around different projects and deadlines variably #phdchat
@allonsdanser - @JRNorwood That's a good policy. avoids distraction. #phdchat
@aephd - @jrnorwood It makes accessing articles a lot easier! #phdchat
@betaburns - Favouriting every 2nd tweet here, lots of good resources to help make reading more effective! #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @allonsdanser #phdchat my rule of thumb was simple: does it work on ALL of my devices - yes=keep, no=abandon
@strictlykaren - Going to ask a daft Q but why use zotero or similar than just type up notes in word? Can easily be pasted into thesis then. 1/2 #phdchat
@evalantsoght - same here. RT @strictlykaren: I have an awful lot of PDF articles in my to read file #phdchat
@strictlykaren - 2/2 haven't used zotero or anything like it so genuine question #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @strictlykaren #phdchat what if you can't use Word all the time? That's why for me, an app like #Evernote was most effective
@srossmktg - @dratarrant Exactly. Half the battle is self-management. Make or break a career. #phdchat
@evalantsoght - @NSRiazat @srossmktg Twitter seems to have difficulties loading the #phdchat tweets tonight...
@lizith - @strictlykaren so that you can change ref style easily for different publications, etc #phdchat
@debbiefuco - @lizith Very handy. Just scan the code and it takes you right to your blog. Here is a free generator http://t.co/qHhAZk1M #phdchat
@dratarrant - @Donna_Peach hehe oh dear! I've been through very similar myself when I first came on here, he's accepted it now #phdchat
@strictlykaren - @JRNorwood Ah of course. I have Evernote on iPad but not used it #phdchat
@lizith - @strictlykaren changing a few manually is OK, but no fun with lots #phdchat
@debbiefuco - @JRNorwood Don't say that! I'm hoping to defend...very soon. I haven't had time to get nervous, yet. #phdchat
@Work_and_Family - Gd evening! Wondering if it's worth spending time on learning how to use Scrivener for writing... #phdchat
@Janshs - Late to #PhDChat post study I still read a lot but it's the writing I miss, manage a little bit
@strictlykaren - @lizith I use endnote feel for refs do these other things do more? #phdchat
@SAGEManagement - Great topic for the summer! Join the #phdchat now- 7:30-8:30pm BST - 'Writing and reading workload: Obtaining a reasonable balance'
@Judiebbrell - @NSRiazat i have had total writers block think declaring my has knocked my confidence and ability to write can't shake it! #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @dratarrant @Donna_Peach #phdchat helps to have an understanding spouse! My wife accepts my schedule because I always make time for her
@ai1sa - @strictlykaren can also cut and paste from endnote to word. Advantages? straight into a reference list. formatting as desired. #phdchat
@evalantsoght - @Judiebbrell #phdchat I seem to do everything in phases - now that I write, I can't keep up with reading...
@lizith - @debbiefuco what phone would I need - I tend to go for cheap PAYG ones at present #phdchat
@Donna_Peach - @JRNorwood @dratarrant I'll make him a cuppa when this chat ends :) #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @JRNorwood ~ PhD schedule doesn't fit around conventions. My life is up and down and all over the place to fit everything in. :-) #phdchat
@debbiefuco - Just how many tabs can one have open at one time? Great stuff being shared! #iste12 #phdchat
@evalantsoght - @ai1sa @strictlykaren #phdchat I've been adding my references manually to my word docs... It feels doable but maybe there's a better way
@lizith - @Work_and_Family some people love scrivener - others (I'm one) don't - try it & see if it works for you, if not, little lost #phdchat
@dratarrant - @Donna_Peach @jrnorwood football is on so Ive got a free pass tonight! #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @NSRiazat #phdchat absolutely! I deliberately pencil in time to relax so I don't overschedule myself
@ICTwitz - Sorry about popping out of discussion. I find the challenge can be to know when to STOP reading, and START writing. #phdchat
@strictlykaren - @evalantsoght I was doing that but lovely librarian uploaded 290 refs into endnote for me so feel compelled to use it now #phdchat
@dratarrant - @DrJeremySegrott: @Work_and_Family we looked at Scrivener in our last #acwri chat. See my blog at http://t.co/3LsvRARe @dratarrant #phdchat
@ICTwitz - Something new to read always seems to pop up! Hmm! #phdchat
@evalantsoght - @NSRiazat @JRNorwood quite so... whenever there's a free moment, there's always some ideas to jot down, some writing to do... #phdchat
@ICTwitz - @JRNorwood Relax? You'll have to explain that to me sometime :-0 #phdchat
@ai1sa - @evalantsoght a ref system also allows for search by groups of content or particular words.... #phdchat
@evalantsoght - @ICTwitz #phdchat Yes, I have this fear of having missed out on a key reference
@JRNorwood - @ICTwitz #phdchat I read about relaxation in a journal somewhere haha
@aephd - @ictwitz AGREED! Always told to write as much as possible. Can be really difficult to move out of needing to read one more study.. #phdchat
@ICTwitz - @evalantsoght I suppose you just have to draw the line for yourself! #phdchat
@evalantsoght - @ai1sa #phdchat I use Endnote - but to make my list in Word I've been copy pasting the references from Endnote, not the Endnote Word feature
@ICTwitz - @JRNorwood Love the irony!!! #phdchat
@NSRiazat - @Judiebbrell ~ hang in there - the writing mojo does come back. :-) #phdchat
@ICTwitz - @aephd There is always that ONE study that pops along!!! Damn those academics ;-) #phdchat
@Work_and_Family - @DrJeremySegrott @dratarrant that's useful. Thanks! #phdchat
@dratarrant - I find reading time on the train works! 3 hrs of only slightly interupted guilt free time! #phdchat
@ai1sa - @evalantsoght the adv of direct EN word feature is when you edit out, the ref list gets auto updated #phdchat
@lizith - @debbiefuco I guess I need to get into the 21st century some time :) #phdchat
@evalantsoght - #phdchat also, am I the only one for whom writing/reading seems to go to evenings/weekends because of students, meetings etc in office?
@ICTwitz - Maybe I should do my writing via twitter! It's the cause of most of my distraction when needing to write. #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @evalantsoght #phdchat you're not alone...for me as a teacher, I am most productive in the summer months
@ICTwitz - A phd, 140 characters at a time :-) #phdchat
@betaburns - @ai1sa @evalantsoght How does your ref mgt system work? Is it just endnote or something else too? #phdchat
@allonsdanser - @NSRiazat I read about it on GradHacker & http://t.co/lJOWXMeN #phdchat Academic ref mangr http://t.co/l9w6aHKT I like the notes feature.
@debbiefuco - @lizith Ha, ha! You are a blogger. I think that counts! #phdchat
@lizith - @ai1sa @evalantsoght having learned to use EN, I wouldn't go back to any other method #phdchat
@ai1sa - @evalantsoght not at all. I work ft and study in the evenings, weekends etc also #phdchat am currently studying on sick leave
@JRNorwood - Blogging DOES count as writing!RT @debbiefuco: @lizith Ha, ha! You are a blogger. I think that counts! #phdchat
@evalantsoght - @ai1sa #phdchat mainly advantage when you number refs? or also advices for author-date refs?
@ICTwitz - @JRNorwood I'm sure my supervisor would understand!!! #phdchat
@Janshs - Wish I had something like refworks for my life mgt #PhDChat :((
@debbiefuco - Love my Macbook! RT @JRNorwood: @ICTwitz #phdchat I use my tablet and my Macbook constantly. iPad to read/annotate, Macbook to write
@allonsdanser - @JRNorwood That's very practical. #phdchat
@evalantsoght - @JRNorwood @debbiefuco @lizith just wonder if that will count as a dissertation :) #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @ICTwitz #phdchat no, probably not :-)
@ai1sa - @evalantsoght wouldnt matter either way. I mostly use the author function, but sometimes need to find by number-when i read it #phdchat
@JRNorwood - @evalantsoght @debbiefuco @lizith #phdchat maybe in a few years, who knows!
@dratarrant - @JRNorwood @evalantsoght yes I have been way more productive with reading/writing in my research only post! #phdchat
@evalantsoght - @ai1sa #phdchat impressive! I'm ft phd student, but other tasks always come in the way of writing/reading
@allonsdanser - @NSRiazat I'm still taking coursework while writing a zero draft, so I have time to explore workflow systems. It's interesting. #phdchat
@m_aliotta - @NSRiazat #phdchat Here a simple tool that I find helpful with managing my reading: http://t.co/7nnU29fN
@evalantsoght - @betaburns @ai1sa #phdchat Endnote + search for refs on ISI to download info + attach pdf
@DeborahALock - Hi all - apologies - am late to the discussion #phdchat
@evalantsoght - @betaburns @ai1sa #phdchat I've >500 refs for my research so far... needs a good system (otherwise i forget where i saved)
